Quality refers to the ability of a product or service to consistently
meet or exceed customer requirements or expectations. Every company wants to have its product to be free from defects so as to gain more customers and hence the profit. Quality Control (QC) is a procedure or set of procedures that a firm follows so that a manufactured product or performed service achieves defined set of quality criteria and meets the requirements of the customer. Inspection is an integral part of Quality Control and it includes visual inspection and dimensional inspection of the product. My project is about the initial inspection of the raw materials and improvements in initial inspection. Here the raw materials are inspected visually according to the MSS SP 55 standards and critical dimensions are measured and recorded in the data sheet. For the ease of inspection a master check sheet was created which can keep track of each and every part received and helps quality control personnel to understand the trend of defects over the period of time. This project was very useful in reducing time of inspection, identifying defects in raw material, keeping track of material and simplifying incoming inspection procedure.
The second part of project include improvements in final inspection
of the products. For maintaining quality at final stage of inspection a check list was prepared which checks almost all aspects of products. Also the problem of frequent rework and touch-up of valves was solved by just a simple modification in the pallet seat. This modification has reduced time as well as cost of the reworking. The third part of project is about the Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) which includes study, preparation and mapping of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) which is supported by the Process Qualification Record (PQR). Outcome of this process is the certificate which shows whether a welder possesses the necessary experience and knowledge to perform a particular weld procedure as per given specifications.
