Design

Design 1: The basic design of the tubes full of coins representing the high, the middle and the

3
low classes of each country.
The country is chosen from a tablet and the year is selected by a slider.

Design 2. A floor map with the European countries from where two people need to choose a
country and step on it. Only when two countries are selected the installation starts working. We
have two times tubes comparing the high, the middle and the low classes of each
country.(There is a possibility of turning the table in order to explore easily the installation)

4
Design 3: The design of using physicalization in the coin movement and LED lighting. Countries
chosen on a tablet will reflect on what the installation portrays. Squares portray coins and LED
lights show the distribution of how much money is in that social class.

Technology
Hardware:
1. Arduino Mega
2. Arduino DC motors converted to linear motion, or pre-made linear actuators

3. Power supply
4. Tubes that would be filled either with water or solid materials
5. Wires
6. Resistors
7. Transistors
8. Silicon to prevent the water from getting on the hardware
9. Speakers for sound effects
10. LED strips for in the water

11. Pressure sensors or Buttons (In case the map is made from wood) (This could be a
good way to make the pressure sensors:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Use-a-DIY-Pressure-Plate-Switch-to-Automate-Your-H/
One problem is whether we can create a digital input using smart choosing of resistors.
Because 50 analog inputs is a lot)
12. Pallets as a possibility to create a higher platform for the country selection plate

13. Monitor (In case the map is digital)
14. Tablet (can be used instead of the slider)
15. Slider (Selection throughout the map)

Software:
1. Unity to handle serial communication and interaction to control the parameters (as digital
buttons) or Processing
2. Arduino to send out values for the handle angle to shift the coins up and down
3. Arduino to show the distribution of the different classes in that specific chosen country
(move water/beads tube)
4. App on a table to display input fields for a country/ countries and a visual digital map
5. Would be a pro to use a touchscreen computer, Unity can then be used as a front and
back end system (if ipad is used then maybe making a mac executable would work,
testing is needed)
