Key Vocabulary from the Article (Define at least 4).

o Catholics- teaches that it is the one true church founded by Jesus Christ, that its bishops
are the successors of Christ's apostles, and that the pope is the successor to Saint Peter. The
Catholic Church maintains that the doctrine on faith and morals that it declares as definitive is
infallible.
o Puritans- were a group of English Reformed Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries
who sought to "purify" the Church of England from its "Catholic" practices, maintaining that the
Church of England was only partially reformed.
o Mayflower-The Mayflower was the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America. It sailed
from Southampton, England, on September 16, 1620, with 102 passengers on board. The voyage
took 65 days, during which time two people died and one person was born.
o Tableau-a group of models or motionless figures representing a scene from a story or
from history; a tableau vivant.

Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own
paragraph
A. Since the beginning of Europeans on Americas shores, religion has always discriminated
people and the unbelievers are the ones who discriminate. They say it is true that the early-
generation Americans were in fact christians, sometimes christians argue with catholics on how
this world that we live in is Christian Nation. The Mayflower set sail, and french pilgrims
came to America to search for religious freedom.
B. Catholics were called papists and banned from colonies, non puritans also. It is said that four
quakers were hung in Boston between 1659 and 1661. Washington was considered a Christian as
well as some of his soldiers. He wanted them to have Christian Spirit. There were crazy laws
stating that only Christians could vote in Massachusetts. In 1777 New York constitution banned
all catholics from public office and this continued on till 1806. In 1779 Thomas Jefferson drafted
the bill and guaranteed that all citizens of every region would be equal. The law that states
unalienable rights was because of citizens wanted to choose their own religion.

C. Adams and Jefferson considered making the law their greatest success. James Madison wrote
a letter stating that that religion is best mixed together. JFK who was catholic felt pushed to
make a speech declaring his loyalty to America, not the pope which was very weird. America is
very divided with religions but that just shows how we all can still work together with people
and not let religion get in the way.

Your Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).

My opinion on all these events is really mixed emotions. I'm really happy that the president's
worked together to get the point across to people that religion shouldn't matter but only the
person. The thing that seems a little off is that JFK did not praise the pope which he was catholic
but only america as a divide from the pope, I have watched conspiracy theories and they make a
lot of sense after this.

Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current
event).
The historical event this is related to is the mayflower which is stated in here on how the
christian and catholic religion feud came about separating people just because of their religious
beliefs as a whole and who they worships and what church they went to.

Relate your Event to the a Theme (at least 3 sentences). SEE BACK FOR
THEMES
This theme is related to religions. This topic is iffy with so many people it is touch and go where
nobody really goes in depth. The different beliefs people have are always in the way if getting to
know a person because they always ask who and what you believe in.

Questions You Have About the Event (4).

The questions I have about this is how did religion start and who was the first to have it after
Jesus and god, it interests me because people have so many different theories and it would be
nice to talk about it in class.
