Americas Incoherent Immigration System by Stuart Anderson details the immigration process

that many people go through and the complexities involved with it. Some of these complexities

are the difficulties involved with becoming a citizen when the immigrant is an unskilled

immigrant. Also the difficulty for even skilled laborers to become citizens and for sponsored

immigrants too. These difficulties are mainly the ability to get approved for unskilled laborers

and the long, tedious process for the other categories (20+ years for philippines and ~10 for

Mexico.) The source also states that the best, and the simplest, solution to these problems is to

allow for more visas/green cards. This article will be used to support the difficulties and the long

process that immigrants face and how the system is terrible. It is similar to other sources in

regards to the immigration system but is unique in the aspect of talking about the problems with

the system.

Undocumented Immigration And Border Enforcement." Migraciones Internacionales 4.1

Roberto Coronados article Crime On The U.S.-Mexico Border: The Effect of Undocumented

Immigration and Border Enforcement talks about the idea of of the correlation between an

increase of illegal immigration and an increase of border crime. The results of this paper are a

significant correlation was found between an increase of illegal immigration and border crime.

The article suggests this result is probably from the illegals immigrants relying on drug

traffickers to cross the border which increases crime in the area. It also details how law

enforcement in a particular sector just pushed crime to a neighboring one. This causes crime to

be more evenly distributed along the border. The purpose of this source in my paper is to talk

about how illegal immigrants cause crime and a new way is needed to remedy this problem.

Coronados paper is unique in my research as it is the only one that talks about crime.

For Government Policy." Social Science Quarterly (University Of Texas Press) 61.1

Shelby Gerking and John Muttis paper Costs And Benefits Of Illegal Immigration: Key Issues

For Government Policy explains the negative aspects of illegal immigration and also some of the

benefits of it. The negative aspect mainly falls onto the cost aspect of illegal immigrants in

relation to jobs. US employees who work in the same job sector as these illegal immigrants will

have to compete with them in the job market which will cause their wages to decrease. The

article states that this might be good for the company owners but not for the common people.

This source also says that if all these negatives are solved, then there is a benefit to the economy.

This article will be used in my paper to describe the negatives of illegal immigrants and why

people dislike them. It is not really unique as this source describes a negative of illegal

immigrants just like Crime On The U.S.-Mexico Border... only it is jobs not crime.

From A Flow Of 500 Million Travelers." Population & Environment 23.3 (2002):

Measuring Illegal Immigration At US Border Stations By Sampling From A Flow Of 500 Million

Travelers by Palmer Morrel-Samuels describes the number of people who cross the border at

border stations and how many of them should be excluded from crossing the border. This study

was conducted with a total flow of 500 million crossings in mind and found that .56 million were

currently excluded from crossing through screenings. These are not all the people that should be

excluded as the study found that anywhere from 3.51 to 6.01 million people should have also

been excluded in border crossings. This source will be used as a statistic of how many illegal

immigrants are entering the country through an easy process as legal immigrants are going

through a long process. It is different than my other sources as the actual number of illegal

immigrants appear in this source, unlike the others which detail the effects of the immigrants

only.

Immigrants: Immigration Reform As Racialized Politics." Journal Of Ethnic & Migration

Asian American Attitudes Towards A US Citizenship Path for Illegal Immigrants by Frank

Samson analyzes the specific mindsets that Asian Americans have towards a citizen path for

illegal immigrants. It entails a study that was conducted by Frank Samson which involved

surveying 3624 people who fit the requirements of the study about their thoughts on immigrants,

their social status, and monetarily status. The article states results that shows how specific social

economical brackets have effects of the results of the survey on if illegal immigrants should have

a path towards citizenship. These results were 34.3% in favor of a path for illegals and 50.6% in

negation of a path towards citizenship with 15.1% in abstention. This source will build up a

major point of my essay of the feelings that legitimate immigrants have towards illegal

immigrants and if the process should be changed. It is a unique piece of information that is

different from other articles in the sense of the paper talks about how Asian Americans view the

process and it has specific stats about how they view a path to citizens for illegal immigrants.

Xiao, Luo. "The Unintended Consequence Of Section 601 Of The Illegal Immigration Reform

And The Immigrant Responsibility Act: The Rise Of U.S.-Based Claims And Their

Impact On The Board Of Immigration Appeals, Federal Judiciary, And Mass Media."

Asian Pacific American Law Journal 20.1 (2015): 31-69. Academic Search Complete.

Web. 8 Dec. 2016.

The Unintended Consequences of Sec. 601 by Luo Xiao examines the purpose of section 601

of the Illegal Immigration Reform Act and the actual impacts that it has on immigration. The

intended purpose of Section 601 was to provide a way for asylum seekers in China to file for

asylum in cases of persecution based on population control. This targeted Chinas One Child

Policy and the cases of forced abortion that were attributed to it. Instead of the intended purpose,

section 601 was used by thousands of Chinese who resided in the US to claim asylum (and

therefore legal residence) on the basis of having more than one US born child. This paper will be

used to support my claim of illegal immigrants finding ways through pieces of legislation to

become citizens. It is a source that has info I had not previously found in an article before.

Thesis: Illegal immigration is a rampant problem in the US and it is causing a decrease of the

draw that the American Dream has towards immigrants through the grief that is involved with

the immigration process.
