SENIOR PROPOSAL

My end goal for my senior project is to approach a different audience on

prevention of domestic violence--This topic is one of my major points in my senior
research paper. When it comes to talking about this issue, the spotlight is often focused
on women, and theyre the primary go-to audience when institutions are trying to create
awareness. My goal is to take a different approach. I want every person in my audience
to be educated on this issue, not just an specific group. Hence, I want to educate the
guys of my school and the men in my local community about domestic violence and its
preventive ways. I got this idea from a campaign called White Ribbons, where a
student reached out to his classmates and after his talk he gave everyone a white
ribbon to show support.
I got in contact with RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an institution
dedicated to ending domestic violence. Im working with, specifically, Lucy Rios-
Director of prevention and communication. Shes being kind to allow me access to
resources from this institution that I can use all throughout my project, such as: People
to contact, flyers, and stats/info.
To start off, Im helping RICADV organize events that they have going on. For
instance, on February 18th, theres a hockey game focused on teen violence
prevention, that I am helping organize + Im gathering some students from BACS to
attend this event. Secondly, theres a ted talk event about domestic violence on April
11th at the convention center that Im also looking forward to helping organize. The
main point of the talk is going to be How do we get boys/men to prevent domestic
violence? which is related to what my main focus for my senior project is.
**These are the events SO FAR in schedule, there will be more happening in the
few months**
So far my plan is to contact kathleen Carty given that she has PhD on this
specific topic, and she has traveled around the world giving conferences to men about
domestic violence prevention. I, along with Brandon, will hopefully meet with her during
winter break. She would give us ideas, tips and advice on how precisely reach out to
men and young adults about prevention of domestic violence. This is the part where Ill
be learning new skills and forming the solid structure for the rest of my project. ----- I can
also reach out to TEN MEN, a program within RICADV that does the same work, and
have local knowledge and research.
Once I meet with Kathleen, I will be able to start getting my presentation ready.
This will be an informative presentation I will be giving the boys in my school about
domestic violence prevention AND the men in my community- Barber shops, churches,
auto repair places, etc. This is the reason I got the idea to work along with Brandon,
given that his research paper is about machismo, and that hes a guy himself. That way
there are two different inputs and perspectives- from both genders- when given this
presentation to students and others. Additionally, it helps that were both bilingual,
because we will be able to explain out objectives to those who dont speak English.
Moreover, Im planning on snooping around a bit out in my community to see if
they have any type of flyers or announcements somewhere regarding domestic
violence. This would help me see whether theres enough awareness out there, locally,
for people to see. Mostly those who might need the information. After doing this, I will go
around and hang out flyers with prevention details, and helpline info to local
hairdressers, laundromats, nail salons, etc. As women who often experience domestic
violence go to these places.
I am looking forward to start this project, because raising awareness about
issues in my community is very important to me; domestic violence being one of them. I
hope I can create a sense of leadership in the young adults in my school regarding this
issue. I want them to be involved, and have them think about problems that they are
often left out of. Also, for people to be more informed about domestic violence, and all
the ways it can be prevented.

HABITS OF MIND

Collaboration: I will be working with Brandon, my coach, and outside institutions

throughout this project. Also, I will be contributing meaningfully back to my
community.
Community Engagement: I will definitely be active in my school and local
community regarding this topic. Ill be giving presentations and engaging my
peers, and getting people from outside involved as well.
Organization: I will have to organize myself and my schedule, in order to meet
my own deadlines and follow my timeline; giving structure to my project.
Uptanderness: This is definitely a big one. I will be speaking out about this issue
in front of different crowds and standing up for whom I believe are
disempowered.
Zest: Im very passionate about this topic and about this project as well. One of
my hopes is to be able to invigorate others by being active and enthusiastic.
Creativity: Being able to come up with a project and implement it by taking risks
and thinking flexibly shows creativity. Im also going to discover more about
myself and become a better leader.
