LA 204: Communication in the Work Place

WEEK 9: TUTORIAL ACTIVITY:

Background to Job Interview Skills:

Job Interviews are the most important start to working life. Without interviews it will be
impossible to get the job you desire or bring you satisfaction.

It is very important that you understand how to get prepared appropriately before you sit your
interviews, before a panel or an individual or even on telephone or email. Without proper and
adequate preparation you may can sure you will be unsuccessful at securing a job.

Conduct a One to One


Tutorial Group Activity:
Interview in 15 minutes!
Break into pairs and do the following:

1. Decide who will be the Interviewer and who will be the Interviewee (one sitting
interview)
2. Based on the information, skills and strategies in the lecture on Job Search Skills,
the Interviewer starts the session. In this scenario you must imagine that you are
being interviewed for Team Leader Position in Community Development in a Mining
Company like Ok Tedi Development Foundation.
3. Imagine that all the questions given below are asked by the Interviewer who is the
Human Resource Manager/ Section Manager [ess] in the organization.
4. When the first 15minutes is over swap responsibility and start instructions 1 to 3.
5. After both of you in your group have completed the round discuss the level of ease
or difficulty you experienced and think about how you can better prepare yourself
for the reality in the future.

NB: There has to be time management and each team member MUST have their turn.

(If not then they may have had a leadership experiences at school or in the community, if so then
tailor questions accordingly)

What are your leadership style like/how do you like to lead/manage your team?
11. What do factors do you into consideration when making decisions?

12. Have you had to deal with disciplining your staff? If so how do you discipline them?

13. How would you solve a conflict between two of your staff members?

apply?

15. What skills and attributes would you bring to this position if you are the successful
applicant for this position?

16. If you were selected for this role how would you contribute to the ongoing success of the
organization?

organization?

Situational

19. There is a big fight in the community over the water tanks your project has supplied to the
land owner villages and your office is notified. However, your immediate supervisor is on her
break and so you have to deal with this. What would be your first response?
