Calculation of Expected values of Resistive & Reactive reaches while testing

Distance relays with TURH test kit.

1. REL-100, ABB make numerical distance relay :

Settings to be checked on the relay
X1,X2,X3
R1,R2,R3
KN1,KN2,KN3
RN1,RN2,RN3

Expected value for Reactive reach :

Assumption : On TURH S1.S2 = 1 & KQ=1.

Zone-1 :
Phase to Phase fault : (Gx + Fx/1000) = [X1/2.5] with 5% tolerance

Phase to Ground fault : (Gx + Fx/1000) = [X1/2.5{(1+KN1)/2}] with 5% tolerance

Similarly X2, KN2 & X3,KN3 to be considered in place of X1,KN1 for Zone-2 & 3
respectively.

Expected value for Resistive reach :

Assumption : On TURH S1.S2 = 1 & KQ=1.

Zone-1 :
Phase to Phase fault : (Gr + Fr/1000) = [1/2.5(R1-X1/20)] with 5% tolerance

Phase to Ground fault :(Gr + Fr/1000) = [1/2.5(RN1/2 X1/20)] with 5% tolerance

Similarly R2 & R3 to be considered in place of R1 for Zone-2 & 3, phase to phase

fault and RN2 & RN3 in place of RN1 for phase to ground fault respectively.

Note: 1. RN1 setting corresponds to phase to ground fault resistive reach in

ohms/loop & not in ohms/phase.
2. Zero sequence compensation factor does not affect the resistive measurement.

2. 7SA511,Siemens make numerical distance relay :

Settings to be checked on the relay
X1,X2,X3
R1,R2,R3
RE/RL(zero sequence compensation factor for resistive reach)
XE/XL(zero sequence compensation factor for reactive reach)
R1E,R2E,R3E

Expected value for Reactive reach :

Assumption : On TURH S1.S2 = 1 & KQ=1.

Zone-1 :
Phase to Phase fault : (Gx + Fx/1000) = [X1/2.5] with 5% tolerance

Phase to Ground fault : (Gx + Fx/1000) = [X1/2.5{(1+XE/XL)/2}] with 5% tolerance

Similarly X2 & X3 to be considered in place of X1 for Zone-2 & 3 respectively.

Expected value for Resistive reach :

Assumption : On TURH S1.S2 = 1 & KQ=1.

Zone-1 :
Phase to Phase fault : (Gr + Fr/1000) = [1/2.5(R1-X1/20)] with 5% tolerance

Phase to Ground fault : (Gr + Fr/1000) = [1/2.5(R1E X1/20)][(1+RE/RL)/2] with

5% tolerance

Similarly R2 & R3 to be considered in place of R1 for Zone-2 & 3 for phase to phase
fault and R2E & R3E in place of R1E for phase to ground fault respectively.

3. Razoa & Razfe , ABB make distance relays :

All settings to be checked on the relays.
Razoa relay : The expected values for reactive & resistive reaches for phase to
ground fault should be multiplied by zero sequence compensation factor (1+ Kn)/2 .
Razfe relay : The expected values for reactive reach for phase to ground fault
should be multiplied by zero sequence compensation factor (1+ Kn)/2 .
Zero seq.compensation factor does not affect resistive measurement
