The Service of Intercession to

Saint Stylianos
from Paphlagonia of Asia Minor

Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia,

Guardian and Nurturer of Children, the Gifts of God The Guardian, Nurturer, and
Protector of the Children
whom God has given to us
Compiled at the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver 2012
The Service of Supplication, or Paraklesis
A Paraklesis, or Supplicatory Service, is sung beseeching the
Theotokos or the saints to intercede on our behalf with God for our

salvation and for relief from any illness or burden in this life. In the
Slavic Orthodox tradition there is a similar service called a
Molieben.
Saint Stylianos
In structure, a Paraklesis is patterned on the order for Matins, with from Paphlagonia of Asia Minor
Psalms, hymns, a Kanon of Supplication, and intercessory
petitions. It is usually celebrated as a stand-alone service in the
church with a priest. It can also be sung at any time and in any
place, even by the faithful alone, in time of need.
Since the Paraklesis is sung for the living, it differs from the
Trisagion and Mnymosynon (Memorial) Services at which prayers
are offered to God for the repose of the souls of the departed.
The Paraklesis, is sung in times of danger, tragedy, sickness,
temptation, or discouragement. The various hymns and prayers ask
the Lord for salvation, deliverance, protection, guidance, and
healing. Although these are addressed to the Virgin Mary and/or
the saints, we are asking them to pray for us to the Lord.
All good things come from God alone. Nonetheless, just as we ask
one another to pray to God for us, or to join us in prayer to God for
a particular purpose, so we also ask the saints in heaven to pray for
us. This is called intercessory prayer, when we ask others, either
on earth or in heaven above, to pray to God for us.
Orthodox Christianityy affirms that each of us is united to all the
faithful living on earth as well as to the Theotokos, the saints, and
the departed souls in a bond of faith and love in Christ. Therefore,
just as in this life we pray for one another and turn to each other
for prayer, we also pray for the departed souls and turn to the
Mother of God and to the saints to pray for us. The Guardian, Nurturer, and

Paphlagonia, the Protector of Children; of the holy and righteous
ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna; of (Saints of the day)
whom we commemorate, and of all the saints: have mercy on us
and save us, for He is a good, and loving, and merciful God.
Troparion
Tone 2
You have been shown a great guide and protector of children and
infants and babes, and a true physician, through the Grace of the
Spirit. Deliver newborns from weaknesses and afflictions, and
various illnesses, keeping them unharmed, and blessing them and
speaking to them, that they grow up well, O Stylianos, blessed by
God.
24 Service of the Paraklesis to Saint Stylianos
Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia
Commemorated on November 26
Saint Stylianos was born in Paphlagonia of Asia Minor sometime
between the fourth and sixth centuries.
He inherited a great fortune from his parents when they died, but
he did not keep it. He gave it away to the poor according to their
need, desiring to help those who were less fortunate.
Stylianos left the city and went to a monastery, where he devoted
his life to God. When other monks became jealous of his great zeal
and devotion, however, he had to leave.
He left the monastery to live alone in a cave in the wilderness,
where he spent his time in prayer and fasting.
The goodness and piety of the saint soon became evident to the
inhabitants of Paphlagonia, and they sought him out to hear his
teaching and to be cured by him. Many were healed of physical
and mental illnesses by his prayers.
Saint Stylianos was known for his love of children, and he would
heal them of their infirmities through his prayers and intercessions
to our merciful God.
Even after his death, the citizens of Paphlagonia believed that he
continued to intercede c for them and their children. Whenever a
child became sick, an icon of Saint Stylianos was brought and
placed over the child's bed.
At the hour of his death, the face of Saint Stylianos suddenly
became radiant, and an angel appeared to receive his soul.
Known as a protector of children, Saint Stylianos is depicted in
iconography holding an infant in his arms.
Pious Christians continue to seek his intercessions before the Lord
to help and protect their children. In addition childless women
entreat his intercession so that God might grant them children.
