Introduction

I. Background of the Study

Vehicle owners have been struggling about changing their engine oil because of its
expensive cost. Worst, after changing the oil, they just throw the used oil anywhere, either land
or water which can cause oil spill. Oil Spill is a type of pollution that occurs on water as well as
on land and can have devastating effect on plants, animal life and the environment. Oil spill can
be caused by people making mistakes and being so careless like improperly disposing used oil
from oil changing of vehicles. Ships, or even vehicles, uses oil in order for its engine to function.
Disposal of waste oil is also one of the problems that should be solved.

Due to this scenario that we are experiencing, many scientists, organizations, industries
and researchers developed different means of preventing such disastrous problem that someday
may lead to extinction of organisms and depletion of natural resources. Chinese engineers have
developed numerous machines to recycle oil. JZC black Waste engine Oil Distillation (Oil
Pyrolysis) equipment from China is one kind of machine which combined the atmospheric
distillation systems and vacuum distillation systems, it is special for distilling and regenerating
the black waste oil, including waste engine oil, lube oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil, dirty diesel oil,
mixed oils etc. Design a processing capacity of 6,000 tons of waste oil processing device, the
raw material of light component too much, waste oil distillation unit uses two stages of
vaporization, atmospheric tower design, vacuum tower (Nakin, 2010). Elastec Company
developed Oil Skimmers that is one of the most efficient oil spill recovery system in the world. It
recovers hydrocarbons from low viscosity to high viscosity with very high efficiency. Elastec oil
spill skimmers recover only oil, leaving the water behind. Costly water disposal is greatly
reduced or eliminated (ELASTEC, 2013). BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA)
accepts used motor oil, oil filters and oil containers through the Used Oil Recycling program.
The materials can be dropped off at various collection depots throughout the province, which
include participating garages, dealerships and retailers. These collection facilities can accept
residential amounts (approximately 30 liters) per visit free of charge (Recycling Council of
British Columbia, 2016)
So, the researchers have decided to create an Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler
Machine. Recycling used engine oil, gives many benefits, large chances of cost savings on oils,
less time spent on oil change-outs, decreased in environmental contamination and waste disposal
costs. This study can help lessen problems regarding improper disposal of used oil to prevent
further issues on oil spill.

II. Statement of the Problem:

At the end of the study, the researchers will be able to design, construct and evaluate an
Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine.
More specifically it sought to:
1. Design an Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine;
2. Construct an Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine;
3. Evaluate an Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine in terms of the:
a. viscosity
b. flammability
c. color
d. amount of oil it can produce

It is therefore hypothesized that the Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine is
effective and efficient as an alternative Used Engine Oil Purifier and Recycler.

III. Significance of the Study:

The study would be beneficial to:
Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
- to add further knowledge to other existing studies for enhancement and
improvement.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
- to give them idea on how to solve problems regarding oil leakage caused by
improper disposal of used oil.
National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC)
- when encountering certain problem particularly in improper disposal of used
oil or oil spill issues.
Engineers
- to have an idea on how to construct the device for more production
Researchers
- serve as their future reference related to their study.
Students
- to gain knowledge in how to use and construct the device and also to know
its purpose and importance.
Affected Community
- to have a solution in facing problems regarding oil spill caused by improper
disposal of used oil.
Vehicle Owners and Farmers Machinery

- To have prior knowledge on how they could recycle oil that can be used
again by their vehicles.

IV. Definition of Terms:

1. Engine Oil

- In this study, engine oil is the product produced from the recycler.

2. Flammability

- In this study, flammability of the produced oil is being compared to the unused engine
oil

3. Recycler

- In this study, the recycler will be constructed with a purpose of converting the
mixture into engine oil through evaporation.

4. Temperature Controller
- In this study, temperature controller is used in order to regulate the heat for the
purification of the used engine oil.

5. Viscosity

- In this study, viscosity of the produced engine oil is being measured to a certain
quality of motor oil.

V. Scopes and Limitations:

The Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler Machine was designed to recycle used
engine oil. This study will determine the effectiveness of the recycler machine.

This is only limited to design, construct the Extemporized Used Engine Oil Recycler
Machine and evaluate the quality of oil it produced. The produced oil will be evaluated in terms
of its viscosity, flammability, color and amount of oil produced.

The construction of the device and the evaluation of the oil it produce will be at Barangay
Duyan-duyan, Santa Barbara, Iloilo from August to October, 2016.
