Title: Sleep Apnea and Asthma: Most Effective Treatments?

Overview:

The problem trying to be solved is that people that have sleep apnea and asthma dont

have a clear treatment plan to help both diseases. The way I plan on finding out the solution to

this problem is to interview professionals and patients about how they were told or how they

treat their sleep apnea/ asthma. There is a link between these two diseases and if one can be

treated fully, then the other can be easier to treat in cases.

Background and History of Issue:

Asthma was a common pulmonary chronic disease that kept the lungs and airway

constricted or narrow. On average in America, 7% or 25 million people of the American

population has asthma and about 3,651 people die every year due to asthma. People with asthma

have very sensitive bronchioles, which are tubes that adjust the amount of air one can intake or

exhale. Asthma attacks can occur when the bodys immune system senses a foreign object in the

body that is found harmful, but is a regular object in the body. Ways that can treat asthma is to

change your diet, exercise more, Long time asthma patients have a higher risk of sleep apnea.

Asthma is usually treated with an daily inhaler to control the symptoms of asthma.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where a person has pauses in breathing for certain

periods of time while asleep. This occurs in several different ways, like a nasal flap could be

blocking the airway or the brain could stop sending signals to the lungs in order to breath. This
causes the brain to become oxygen deprived, stressed, not enough sleep, and possibly death in

severe cases. On average, about 6.62% or 18 million people of the American population has had

a case of sleep apnea. Most people treat this by using a continuous positive airway pressure

(CPAP) machine, but some do surgery in order to completely get rid of the anatomical problem.

Problem Statement and Rationale:

The problem is figuring out the best way for people to treat both diseases the most

effective. In most articles, the two most recommended treatments are surgery and using the

CPAP machine. There is a lack of proof of which is the most effective because people have their

personal opinions about surgery and the use of the CPAP machine. One side of the question is

that surgery is expensive, dangerous, time consuming, and not necessary. On the other side,

CPAP machine is also expensive, loud, annoying, and very uncomfortable. Many people who

have sleeping troubles, arent knowledgeable the cause of their trouble at night. The general

public should know what sleep apnea is and how it should be diagnosed and treated, as is

asthma. Sleep apnea is not a commonly known illness and it is good to increase public

awareness.

Basis of the Hypothesis:

I believe that during the night, as asthma symptoms worsen, the constriction of the airway

greatly affects the severity of a sleep apnea attack. Surgery is the best way to treat sleep apnea

and asthma at the same time because once the anatomical reason is gone, there cant be another

way for the apnea attacks to happen. Unless, there is a brain impulse problem that wont send

signals to the lungs to breath. Although surgery has a higher danger factor, the payout will

greatly outweigh the payout of use of the CPAP machine. The CPAP machine has to be used
every night and is loud and uncomfortable where the surgery is short recovery time. After

treating sleep apnea, asthma can then be addressed by allowing the person affected focus on

treating asthma by itself rather than trying to still treat asthma and sleep apnea.

Operational Definitions:

Constriction :By this, I mean that the airway is constricted due to asthma or allergies

affecting the body and nothing else.

Sleep Apnea: A sleeping disorder where the body stops breathing and goes through

pauses of breathing while in their sleep. This is caused by either an anatomical piece

blocking the airway or the brain isnt sending correct signals to the lung to breathe.

Research Design:

For this, I will be conducting correlational research. I will be studying the way sleep specialist

and allergist study their patients in order to diagnose them. I will do this by reading articles/

watching online or I could get a first hand look if they allow me to. Then I will try to collect

some data from my fathers sleep patterns and his tests that he has conducted in the past. It is

possible for him to go back and do another sleep test at the hospital, so I could get recent

information. Of course with the data I have collected, I can then use correlation research in order

to find trends between asthma and sleep apnea in order for myself to come up with predictions.

The data I am collecting is qualitative because I will also be interviewing possible patients, users

of these treatments, and professionals/ doctors.

Product Overview:

At the end of this problem, the desired goal is to come up with an article/ journal article about

which treatment was the most effective for most sleep apnea and asthma patients. I would like
the audience of these findings to be people who are struggling to find treatments for their sleep

apnea and asthma. On a side note, I would also like the general public to know about what sleep

apnea is. There isnt a large population of this world that knows about what sleep apnea is. I

would like to not only talk about treatments, but I would also like to inform the general public

about sleep apnea.

Logistical Considerations:

Some problems could be getting interviews with the specific people I need. There arent many in

the American population with these types of conditions and have used these treatments. Then

finding the correct questions to ask will be difficult because each interviewee is different than the

last. Also, tweaking questions in order to find out information I want to find out could be

difficult.
