2. (a) A convenience store has two separate locations where customers can be checked out as they leave. These
locations each have two cash registers and two employees who check out customers. Let X be the number
of cash registers being used at a perticular time for location 1 and Y the number being used at the same
time for location 2. The joint probability functions (10 marks)

Y
0 1 2
0 0.12 0.04 0.04
X 1 0.08 0.19 0.05
2 0.06 0.12 0.30
(i) Give the marginal distribution of both X and Y as well as the probability distribution of X given
Y = 2.
(ii) Give E(X) and Var(X).
(5 marks)
(b) Given the two random variable X and Y which have the joint density
(
xex(1+y) for x > 0andy > 0
f (x) =

(b) The daily consumption of milk in a city, in excess 0f 20,000 gallons, is approximately distributed as a
1
gamma variate with the parameter k = 2 and = 10,000 . The city has a daily stock of 30,000 gallons,
what is the probability that the stock is insufficient on a particular day? (10 marks)

5. (a) In a survey of buying habits, 400 women shoppers are chosen at random in super market A located in a
certain section of the city. Their average weekly food expenditure is Rs. 250 with a standard deviation
of Rs. 40. For 400 women shoppers chosen at random in supper market B in another section of the city,
the average weekly food expenditure is Rs. 220 with a standard of Rs. 55. Test at 1% level of significance
whether the average weekly food expenditures of the two populations of shoppers are equal. (10 marks)
(b) Two random sample gave the following results (10 marks)

Samples Size Sample Mean Sum of the squares of deviations

from the mean
1 10 15 90
2 12 14 108

Test whether the samples come from the same normal population.

6. (a) The following table gives a classification of a sample of 100 plants of their flower colour and flatness of
leaf. (10 marks)

Flat leaves Curved leaves Total

White flowers 40 20 60
Red flowers 10 30 40
Total 50 50 100
Test whether the flower colour is independent of the flatness of leaf.
