    Now,recallthatwearrivedatthecharacteristicequationbyassumingthatallsolutionstothedifferential
    equationwillbeoftheform


    Pluggingourtworootsintothegeneralformofthesolutiongivesthefollowingsolutionstothedifferential
    equation.


    Now,thesetwofunctionsareniceenough(theresthosewordsagainwellgetaroundtodefining
    themeventually)toformthegeneralsolution.Wedohaveaproblemhowever.Sincewestartedwithonly
    realnumbersinourdifferentialequationwewouldlikeoursolutiontoonlyinvolverealnumbers.Thetwo
    solutionsabovearecomplexandsowewouldliketogetourhandsonacoupleofsolutions(niceenough
    ofcourse)thatarereal.
