The output of the FFT appears in Column A. Note that the output is a collection of
complex-valued coefficients; this is because the Fourier transform itself is complex
valued. To obtain meaningful results for our set of real-valued signal data it is
necessary to calculate the modulus of the complex coefficients. This is easily done
using the Excel function IMABS(cell_number). The results appear in Column B.
Next, we need to determine the actual frequencies to which each of the Fourier
coefficients correspond to. It turns out that the maximum frequency we can resolve
(the Nyquist frequency) is equal to one-half the sampling frequency. The frequency
resolution in the output is equal to the Nyquist frequency divided by one-half the
number of data points in the original sample. In other words, the frequency resolution
Delta_f = Sampling Frequency/N.
