PENG 323/3321: Surface Facilities Spring 2017

Final Project Problem Statement

Submission Deadline Saturday May 20 @ 17:00

Group SFS (Saad-Fawzi-Sharky)
(A hard copy of a clean presentable engineering design document)

The following data are given for an on-shore oil field:

Oil rate: 18,000BPD

Water rate: 7,500BPD
Gasoil ratio: 800 SCF/bbl
Water salinity 460,000 ppm
Operating pressure: 600 psia
Operating temperature: 80 F
Oil gravity: 34 API
Water specific gravity: 1.08
Gas specific gravity: 0.76
Hydrogen Sulfide (in gas stream): 340 ppm

The owner company of this field have contracts to sell both gas and oil to end users and an
obligation to meet environmental disposition requirements for water with the following
specifications:

Oil: BS&W = 1%
Salinity = 10 PTB

Water: Maximum allowable oil droplet diameter: 300 microns

Gas (sold as NGL): Condensate removal

Sulfur removal
Inert gas (CO2 and N2) removal

1) Student Group [10 grade points] shall develop a schematic flow diagram of a GOSP that
achieves the commercial objectives of the owner company, with a full and clear
identification of the selected equipment to achieve each step of separation and treatment
required.
2) Student A: [15 grade points] will perform type selection (with justification) and
calculations for the required separation and treatment steps to oil commodity including
3-phase separator, free-water removal- emulsion treatment, desalter, stabilization and
sweetening.
3) Student B: [15 grade points] will perform type selection (with justification) and
calculation (whenever applicable) for the water and NGL produced.
4) Student C: [15 grade points] Mechanical calculations, equipment weights and costing.
Equipment data sheets for each individual piece of equipment and a description of the
process control system for the flow sheet.
5) Student Group: [5 Bonus grade points] demonstrated optimization ideas for the process
design to minimize the cost of separation and purification and hence maximize the profit
of the owner company

Note: Students groups and individual students are free to make appropriate assumptions as
needed and provide justifications for their assumptions.
