VOLVO D13H engines.

Service Procedures

Engine Harness, Replacement

You must read and understand the precautions and


guidelines in Service Information, group 20, "General
Safety Practices, Engine" before performing this
procedure. If you are not properly trained and certified
in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training before
you perform it.

Refer to Service Bulletin 28401, Engine Sensor


Locations, while you perform this procedure. It will help
you find the sensors as you remove the engine harness.

Removal

Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a flat level
surface, applying the parking brake, chocking the rear
wheel, and placing the transmission in neutral.

Turn the front wheels all the way to the left.

Remove the chassis side fairing, if equipped.

Remove battery cover and disconnect all ground cables
from the battery ground posts.

Remove the left side and right side fender splash guard.

Remove the starter solenoid wires and nearby tie straps.

Disconnect the following connections on the hot side of
the engine. Remove P-clamps and cut tie straps.
Engine Variable Geometry Turbocharger Actuator
Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Temperature Sensor
and Differential Pressure Sensor
Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Engine Piston Cooling oil Supply Valve
Engine Oil Thermostat Valve
Engine Piston Cooling Oil Pressure Sensor
Piston Cooling Jet Sensor

Remove the right front harness section from left front of
cylinder head.

Remove the air filter housing and fresh air pipe.

Remove the air compressor inlet pipe fasteners from the
cylinder head.

Remove the lower middle dash panel.

Remove the pedal cover.

Remove the engine cover fasteners.

Disconnect the following rear engine harness connections
camshaft speed sensor, crankshaft speed sensor,
and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. Remove
P-clamps.

Remove the rear section of the engine harness. Cut tie
straps.

Remove the air compressor inlet pipe.

Remove the air compressor output fitting and bracket.
Set the fitting and bracket aside.

Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the valve
cover and intake manifold. Set the tube aside.

Disconnect the intake manifold air temperature/pressure
sensor (IMAT/P). Cut tie straps and remove P-clamp.

Disconnect the following left lower harness connections.
Remove lower P-clamp.

Disconnect the following cold side middle harness
connections. Remove P-clamps.
Crankcase Pressure Sensor
Engine Oil Pressure Sensor
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Fuel Pressure Sensor
Aftertreatment Hydrocarbon Dosing Module
Aftertreatment Fuel Pressure Sensor

Disconnect the following cold side front harness
connections. Remove P-clamp.

Disconnect the following upper front harness connections.
Remove P-clamps.
Cylinder head pass through fastener
Intake Air Heater control and sensor

Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) crossover
pipe.

Remove the valve cover fasteners.

Remove the valve cover.

Disconnect the harness connectors from engine injectors
and the engine brake control valve, if equipped. Cut tie
straps that attach the harness. Remove harness from
pass through hole in the front of the engine.

Remove the harness box fasteners. Remove engine
harness from engine.

Installation

Install new harness box on the engine.

Put the left, lower, middle section of the harness in place.
Start to attach P-clamps.

Connect the following harness connections.
Crankcase Pressure Sensor
Oil Pressure Sensor
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Fuel Pressure Sensor

Connect the following cold side lower harness
connections. Fasten P-clamps.

Temporarily put the front upper harness in place.

Put the front, left, lower section of the harness in place.

Connect the following harness connections. Attach the
harness with P-clamps and tie straps.
Alternator
A/C
Ground
Fuel Pressure Sensor

Feed the injector harness through the pass through.
Attach pass through fastener.

Route and connect the engine injector harness to the
injectors and the engine compression brake actuator, if
equipped. Attach the harness with high-temperature tie
straps.

Install the valve cover. Tighten fasteners. See Group
20 Specifications for D13H.

Connect the following upper front harness connections.
Attach harness with P-clamps and tie straps.
Intake air heater control and sensor
Intake pressure sensor

Put the hot side front harness in place. Start to attach
P-clamps.

Attach the right front harness. Tighten P-clamps and
install tie straps.

Install the air compressor output line and bracket.

Install the ventilation tube in valve cover. Attach bracket.

Connect the fan control connection. Use tie straps to
attach the fan control and auxiliary heater cable to the left
side of the engine harness.

Connect the intake air temperature sensor with tie straps
and P-clamp.

Put the rear section of the engine harness in place.
Connect the following rear engine harness connections.
Start to attach P-clamps.
1 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
2 Camshaft Speed Sensor
3 Crankshaft Speed Sensor

Tighten the P-clamps and install tie straps to attach rear
harness.

Use tie straps to attach the auxiliary heater cable to rear
harness.

Install starter solenoid wires and fasten with tie straps.

Install engine cover. Tighten fasteners. See Group 20
Specifications for D13H.

Install pedal cover and lower middle dash panel.

Connect the following connections on the right side of the
engine. Attach harness with P-clamps and tie straps.

Check engine operation. Make sure it operates normally.
