Class/Class Level: Spanish Level 3

Objectives:
-Students will learn about a popular drink in many Latin American countriesel mate.
-Students will be able to consider, through conversing and writing, the deeper meaning of the tradition of drinking mate and what it represents to
the cultures who drink it.

Rationale:
Students have just begun their unit on foods from different Latin American countries. They will be learning about different recipes and what these
dishes mean to the culture. While mate is a drink, it fits in quite well with this unit. Mate is interesting in that there are many rules that need to be
followed while drinking mate in a group. There are many undertones to these rules and rituals that reveal many things about the culturesuch as
valuing time with friends and family, the importance of sharing as they physically share the drink from the same cup, and the importance of
showing respect and care towards your loved ones.

Standards:
1.1Interpersonal Communication: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and
exchange opinions.
1.2Interpretive Communication: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
2.2Products and perspectives: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture
