include how Philippine become an independent country, what factors cause Philippines to
appear as it is in the presence and who play an important role in leading Philippines from past to

Philippines once was Spains colonial. Spain gives independence date to Philippines as 12 June. But
in 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris that ended the
SpanishAmerican War. So America gives Philippines independence day as 4 july.

National symbol- Jose Rizal, he is the greatest hero of the Philippines, he wrote two novels that
energized the nationalism movement and the revolution during the time of Spaniards.

5 important people:
Ferdinand Marcos- a politician who was president of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He rules as
dictator under martial law from 1972 until 1981.

Corazon Aquino- 11th president of the Philippines, first female president in Asia. She restored
democracy after the long dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.

Benigno Aquino 3- a politician who served as the 1st president of the Philippines from 2010 until
2016.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo- Gloria Macapagal Arroyo served as the 14th President of the Philippines from
2001 to 2010, as the 12th Vice President of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001, and is currently a member
of the House of Representatives representing the 2nd District of Pampanga. She was the countrys
second female president (after Corazon Aquino), and the daughter of former President Diosdado
Macapagal.
Henry Sy- Henry Sy is a Chinese Filipino businessman and the founder of SM Group and chairman of SM
Prime Holdings, the largest retailer and shopping mall operator in the Philippines. He earned his
Associate of Arts degree in Commercial Studies at Far Eastern University in 1950. Acknowledged as the
countrys Retail King, he has come a long way from the modest shoe store he set up in Quiapo in 1946,
to become Asias biggest shopping mall operator with over 30 malls throughout the Philippines.

Event in 1986- Presidential elections see Marcos opposed by Aqunios widow Corazon. Marcos
declared himself as a winner but Aqunio dispute results. People protest, military in Manila abandon
Marcos, New government says Marcos looted billions of dollars during his rule.

Republic with General Aguinaldo as president, launch armed struggle against US forces
known as Philippine-American War.

1901 - Emilio Aguinaldo captured.

1902 - Philippine-American War formally ends as US civil government replaces military


rule. Some independence forces fight on until defeat of Moro resistance in south in
1913.
1907 - Elected Philippine assembly inaugurated under US rule. 1916 - US government
promises Philippines greater autonomy, leading to independence.

1935 - A plebiscite approves establishment of Commonwealth of Philippines. Manuel


Quezon is its first president. Philippines promised full independence within 10 years.

1941- Japan seize Philippines

1947- The Us is awarded military bases on the islands

1965- Ferdinand Marcos became president

1972- Marcos declared martial law. Parliament suspended opposition politicians


arrested, censorship imposed absolute powers.

1973- New constitution gives Marcos absolute powers

Lawyer and politician Rodrigo Duterte served seven terms as mayor of Davao
City in the Philippines. In 2016, he became the 16th president of the Philippines.
