Linguistics a guide to volunteering

The Volunteering Services Unit exists to help UCL students get involved in volunteering
activities in the local community. We have over 500 different projects on offer, including lots
of one-off events where you don't need to make a regular commitment.

This sheet is a taster of some of the opportunities on offer you can find plenty more at

Students tell us that through volunteering theyve discovered London, felt more at home,
and made new friends. It can also help you find paid work and gain useful experiences.

UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION


CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH PARTNERS
The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education are looking for UCL students and
staff with an excellent command of the English language to provide conversation practice to
university students from Japan who are at UCL for a three-week course in English language
and culture.

The purpose is to help enhance their English language skills and give them an opportunity
to meet members of the UCL community. You will need to be friendly, patient and able to
hold a discussion in English at a level that is comprehensible to the students. English is a
foreign/second language for all students and levels range from elementary to advanced. No
teaching experience is necessary for this position. This is a great opportunity to gain some
experience in the education sector and get to know students from overseas institutions.

ESOL AND IT TEAHCERS
United Migrant Workers Education Project (UMWEP) is looking for volunteer tutors to
deliver its Alternative Education Model (AEM). We welcome experienced ESOL and ICT
Tutors/Assistant Tutors, but also those with an interest in non-formal adult education. You
dont need a teaching qualification to join our project, but we require you have a good
standard of the subject you want to teach.

The program is open to all volunteers whether you are at university, someone wanting to
gain some teaching experience in an informal setting or someone who simply wants to
contribute part of her/his spare time supporting migrant workers. If you are willing to share

your knowledge and skills with migrant and vulnerable workers, this is a great opportunity to
do so.

ROMA SUPPORT GROUP


PROJECTS VOLUNTEER
We are seeking volunteers who can help us deliver various projects within our organisation:
Arts, Advice & Advocacy, Aspirations, and Health Projects. Duties include mentoring,
translating/interpreting from Eastern European languages to English and vice versa,
provide advice and advocacy for and on behalf of Roma clients, chaperoning Roma
children from and to venues, general support to advice workers and Roma Support Group
staff.

SALUSBURY WORLD REFUGEE CENTRE


EDUCATIONAL MENTORING
Salusbury WORLD is a charity situated within Salusbury Primary School, in Queens Park.
We work with refugee and asylum seeking children and families. We are looking for
educational mentors to support refugee pupils at two local secondary schools in Brent. You
will also have the chance to help a vulnerable young person build their confidence, improve
and strengthen their English and academic abilities. As educational mentors who volunteer
at the school, you will have the opportunity to build up valuable experience which will be
extremely beneficial in seeking future employment.

HACKNEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE HOMEWORK CLUB


HOMEWORK CLUB VOLUNTEER
Come to the Homework Club at Hackney Community College!

You can help 14-19 year old students with: Basic English and Maths homework
Speaking skills Fun activities Self-confidence. The club runs every Friday 2-3.30pm.
Training is provided, no qualifications necessary. Gain some valuable experience and have
some fun with a diverse group of lively young adults!

FUNDACION UNIVERSIA
ENGLISH COLLABORATOR FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The Fundacion Universia is committed to creating optimal conditions for disabled people to
access the labour market. Communication skills in English allow increased employment
opportunities however, Spanish university students with disabilities often have difficulties
improving their English to a proficient level.

The volunteer will converse in English during two weekly 45-minutes on line sessions with
Spanish students with disabilities about the subjects they will agree before. The volunteer
has to be a person with good communication skills in English, and above all should be easy
to talk to and with an interest in meeting people from another country and culture.

The volunteer will develop the following skills: Knowledge and experience in working with
people with disabilities; Experience participating in an equal opportunities program;
Coaching in English skills to people with English as second language. If you are interested
