1 WHEREAS, The L e g i s l a t u r e o f t h e S t a t e o f Texas i s p l e a s e d t o

2 pay tribute t o N a t i o n a l A e r o n a u t i c s and Space A d m i n i s t r a t i o n


3 (NASA), whose intrepid explorations of space and important
4 s c i e n t i f i c d i s c o v e r i e s have i n s p i r e d and b e n e f i t e d t h e p e o p l e o f
5 our n a t i o n and s t a t e ; and
6 WHEREAS, The Space E x p l o r a t i o n V i s i o n h a s s e t a g o a l of
7 r e t u r n i n g t h e Space S h u t t l e t o f l i g h t , c o m p l e t i n g assembly o f t h e
8 International Space Station, developing the Crew Exploration
9 Vehicle, returning humans to the moon, and pursuing human
10 e x p l o r a t i o n o f Mars and t h e s o l a r system; and
11 WHEREAS, N A S A ' s landmark achievement i n p u t t i n g t h e f i r s t man
12 on t h e moon, a s t r o n a u t N e i l Armstrong, on J u l y 2 0 , 1969, c a p t u r e d
13 t h e i m a g i n a t i o n o f p e o p l e everywhere; and
14 WHEREAS, This major accomplishment ushered in new and
15 e x c i t i n g t e c h n o l o g i c a l advances t h a t have b e n e f i t e d our n a t i o n ' s
16 s e c u r i t y and c e l l u l a r communications; NASA h a s a l s o advanced our
17 h e a l t h c a r e system t h r o u g h t h e development of MRI and CAT s c a n
18 t e c h n o l o g y , f e t a l h e a r t m o n i t o r s , programmable h e a r t pacemakers,
19 and o t h e r i m p o r t a n t m e d i c a l d e v i c e s ; and
20 WHEREAS, Through e d u c a t i o n programs l i k e Texas Aerospace
21 S c h o l a r s , t h e NASA E x p l o r e r S c h o o l s , and t h e Network of Educator

22 A s t r o n a u t T e a c h e r s , NASA is n u r t u r i n g a new g e n e r a t i o n o f e x p l o r e r s
23 and s c i e n t i s t s who can c o n t r i b u t e t o our n a t i o n ' s e x c e l l e n c e ; and
24 WHZREAS, NASA p l a y s a v i t a l r o l e i n t h e economy o f t h e Lone

1 Star State, by employing nearly 3,000 civil servants and
2 a p p r o x i m a t e l y 13,000 c o n t r a c t o r s a t t h e Johnson Space C e n t e r and by
3 awarding a l m o s t $4 b i l l i o n worth of NASA c o n t r a c t s a n n u a l l y ; small
4 b u s i n e s s e s a c r o s s Texas w i t h t e c h n i c a l c h a l l e n g e s have b e n e f i t e d
5 from t h e s u p p o r t of t h e a e r o s p a c e i n d u s t r y , NASA, and t h e S t a t e of
6 Texas' s u p p o r t of t h e Technology Outreach Program, r e s u l t i n g i n new
7 b u s i n e s s v e n t u r e s w i t h i n t h e s t a t e ; and
8 WHEREAS, The Space E x p l o r a t i o n V i s i o n h a s t h e p o t e n t i a l t o

9 further drive innovation, development, and advancement i n the


10 a e r o s p a c e and o t h e r h i g h t e c h n o l o g y i n d u s t r i e s a c r o s s t h e n a t i o n

12 WHEREAS, The e x t r a o r d i n a r y c o n t r i b u t i o n s of NASA t o s c i e n c e

13 and t e c h n o l o g y a r e t h e p r i d e o f our s t a t e , and t h e Space E x p l o r a t i o n
