Yousuf Karsh was born December 23, 1908 in Mardin, Turkey.

Next, Yousuf took art classes and a guy named Garo introduced him
to lighting techniques which made karsh use this dramatic lighting in
his portraits. In 1923,Yousuf had to build a studio with financial help
from his uncle because, he was also affiliated with photography and
he also lived with him & karsh was one of the greatest
editorial/portrait canadian photographers in the 20th century. Whom
made many portraits of famous people, to Muhammad Ali to John F.
Kennedy , Audrey Hepburn.

There are several different types of photography and the most


common is art photography that is used to give a visual of specific
events , and mirroring reality, and focus on your surroundings , you
have to vision the artist as the photographer. Another category of
photography is, Portrait photography which is pictures of famous
people or a person that captures the personality of the picture, the
lighting, backdrops, and poses. Of course, there is a famous
photographer named Yousuf Karsh who was influenced by the work
of portraying portrait photography Hepburn. Later, Yousuf instantly
connected with Ottawa Little theatre and giving an opportunity to
photograph actors. Meaning that he visited the theatre, and it caught
her interest in going there. Until then, he met an actress named
Solange Gauthier who he married in 1939.
After that , Karsh's portraits were published in a canadian newspaper.
He photographed Franklin D. Roosevelt and prime minister Mackenzie king
and instantly Yousaf became notorious in photojournalism.In 1947, he
became a canadian citizen and most pictures were taken in black and
white. One of his favorite books were called the Faces of Destiny
published in (1946), Portraits of Greatness(1959), In Search of
Greatness(1962), Faces of our time(1971), Karsh Canadians (1978),
and Karsh sity you're retrospective (1996). Meanwhile , closed the studio
in 1992 and moved to Boston with his second wife in 1997 and his Churchill
portrait was about a effect on karsh career. He made portraits about World
War 2 of Winston Churchill. As a upcoming photographer , Yousuf traveled
the world to photograph political and military leaders, celebrity writers,
artists, and entertainers.
In reference of Yousuf he quoted, look and think before opening the
shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera. Interpreting
that , you should pay attention to the shutter while taking the picture and
putting your heart into it. The kind of camera karsh uses to take pictures is
called a 8-by-10 view camera & while using this camera make sure to stir
the emotions of the viewer , lay bare the soul of his sitter. Forthwith ,Yousuf
is still studying at Ottawa Little theatre he studies theatrical lightning. In the
meantime, a governor named general Lord Tweedsmuir introduced Yousuf
to prime minister Mackenzie king who brought him into Winston Churchill.
His work is now shown at the art institute of Chicago, the international
museum of photography at George Eastman house in Rochester,
Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY , Museum of Art in Tokyo, National
Portrait gallery in London , and Saint Louis Art Museum.
Furthermore, Yousuf many honors awards and one is from Canada
Council Medal , 1965 and U.S. Presidential citation , 1971 & National
association of photographic art, 1974 which is also an achievement award.
Soon, Karsh started visiting at Ohio University and Emerson college in
Boston as a professor and became an photographic adviser for Expo 70 in
Osaka, Japan. He is a member of the Royal canadian Academy of Arts and
his first exhibition in 1936 in drawing room of the Hotel Chateau Laurier.
Lastly, Yousuf Karsh moved back to Boston in the 1990s and retired in
1992 & years later Yousuf sadly died in 2002 Brigham in a women's
hospital.
