JOSE DE SAN MARTIN


EARLY LIFE
Born on February 25, 1778 in
Yapeyu in the Argentine provinces
of Corrientes

When he was six he was educated at


the Seminary of Nobles in Madrid,
then left to begin his military career

By age 11 he joined the army as a


cadet

By 17 he was a lieutenant

He married Mara Remedies
de Escalada, who was apart
of a distinguished family of
the country

He had a daughter,
Mercedes Tomasa de San
Martn y Escalada

On August 3,1823 his wife


dies

On August 17,1850 he died


START OF THE REVOLUTION
San Martn took command of
the Army of the North in
January of 1814, he then
drilled the recruits into a
fighting force.

His plan would to cross the


Andes in the south, liberate
Chile, and attack Peru from the
south and by sea.

In July of 1816 San Martn


finally got approval for his plan
from President Juan Martn de
Pueyrredn.
CROSSING THE ANDES

In January of 1817, the army set off


to cross the Andes

The Spanish forces in Chile were


expecting him, but he fooled the
Spanish by mentioning a wrong
route to some Indian allies.

In February, they entered Chile


unopposed

San Martn lost very few men and


animals because of his planning
BATTLE OF CHACABUCO

Once the Spanish realized


they were tricked they tried
to keep the Army of the
Andes out of Santiago

San Martn men met the


Spanish on February 12,1817

The battle was a huge victory

The Spanish lost half of their


force and fled Santiago
THE BATTLE OF MAIPU

After the victory at Chacabuco, he


returned to Buenos Aires to get
funds and reinforcements

He hurried back to Chile when he


heard that the Spanish were
threatening Santiago

San Martn met the Spanish on


April 5, 1818

He crushed the Spanish army and


killed over 2,000
LIBERATION OF CHILE

After the victory at


Maipu marked the
liberation of Chile

Spain could never


again give threat to
the area
CONCLUSION

In conclusion he started started his


military career at a young age and
was always passionate about the
military

He led Chile into independence


against the Spanish in 1817

He continued to liberate other


countries against the Spanish Rule
