This catalog and the components are designed specically to address the unique characteris"cs of a
carbon steel rubber lined piping system. This includes, but it not limited to dimensional fabrica"on restric-
"ons and end termina"on considera"ons.
Fi#ng end to end and center to end dimensions are based on standard bu$ weld #ng dimensions with
a tangent length equal to a weld neck ange. This makes all #ng dimensions the same regardless of end
termina"on. It also makes any #ng dimension easy to calculate in the eld or oce with any bu$ weld
#ng dimension source.
3D and 5D center to end dimensions have been standardized to include a tangent length equal to one
nominal diameter up to 24 (600mm). All bends greater than 24 (600mm) have a 24 (635mm tangent).
This is consistent with current and historical long sweep bend dimensions. Shorter tangents are available
upon request but may require special fabrica"on considera"ons or extra costs. Please call for details.
This library respects the industry standard rubber face gasket 1/8 (6mm) on all end termina"ons.
Fi#ng dimensions are listed to 48 (1200mm) in this publica"on. Sizes larger than this are available and
sized with the same philosophy. Please call Fuller for details.

The Falex Miller Number Slurry Abrasivity Test Machine can be used to develop data from which either the relave abrasivity of any slurry (Miller
Number), or the response of dierent materials to the abrasivity of dierent slurries (SAR Number), can be determined, meeng the requirements
of ASTM G75, Test Method for Determinaon of Slurry Abrasivity (Miller Number) and Slurry Abrasion Response of Materials (SAR Number).
The Miller Number is an index of the relave abrasivity of slurries. Its primary purpose is to rank the abrasivity of slurries in terms of the wear of a
standard reference material. The wear damage on the block is worse as the Falex Miller Number gets higher.
The SAR Number is an index of the relave abrasion response of materials as tested in any parcular slurry of interest. The SAR Number is a gen-
eralized form of the Miller Number applicable to materials other than the referenced material used for the Miller Number determinaon. A major
purpose is to rank construcon materials for use in a system for pumping and uid handling equipment for a parcular slurry. The slurry damage on
the specimen of material being tested is worse as the SAR Number gets higher
Crical velocity: There is a great risk of operang problems where irregular ow condions are present as well as a risk
of accumulaon and plugging if the ow velocity is too low. The velocity (speed) at which the transion occurs from a sliding bed of
material to a heterogeneous rate of ow is known as the crical velocity and is very interesng for the technique of hydro-transport.
At velocies below crical, the danger of clogging is great. Increased parcle size, parcle density and pipe diameter give increased
crical velocity. Empirical calculaon terms are available for an esmated decision on the crical velocity. is calculated according to
Durand-Condolios equaon.
Flow velocity: Wear is greatly aected by the rate of ow. Praccal tests have shown that wear in slurry applicaons wear increases
exponenally with the ow velocity and by an exponent between 2 and 3.
Heterogeneous and turbulent ow: Slurries in the mining industry are o#en heterogeneous. The ow is kept turbulent to avoid
sedimentaon and a sliding bed of material. In spite of this, most of the material is usually concentrated in the lower
part of the pipe (in a horizontal ow) and therefore the wear is heavier here than in the upper poron. To compensate for this
heavier wear, it is usual, where possible, to rotate the hose or pipe 90-120 degrees to regular intervals.
Parcle size: Suspensions frequently contain both small parcles smaller than 0.05 mm as well as coarse parcles.
This dispersion of the parcle size is o#en posive. The risk of sedimentaon is smaller, which means that the velocity might be
lowered. It also reduces the wear and somemes even the fricon losses, including at unchanged velocies. The liquid together with
the small parcles establishes a homogeneous suspension which represents the bearing media. The density and the viscosity are
usually larger than for the liquid only. The bigger parcles together with the bearing media establish a heterogeneous suspension.
The increased density of the bearing media, caused by the small parcles, has a smaller dierence of density for this heterogeneous
suspension. In bigger pipeline-projects it is benecial to nd a favourable dispersion of the parcle size.
Parcles hardness: The parcle hardness can be expressed according to dierent scales, of which the most common are Mohs and
Brinnells. The wear-tendency abrasivity of a material is expressed as a Miller number which is determined by a special test pro-
cedure. The Miller number also gives another value a$ribuon For how the wearing eect changes during transportaon due to
parcle breakdown. This may be a negave if there is a loss of abrasion and a posive if there is a gain. The phenomenon of abrasion
increasing over me is comparavely rare but it can occur under certain condions if the solids tend to split with bri$le fractures,
exposing fresh sharp edges.
Concentraon, size, density and prole of the parcles: The amount of wear increases with the concentraon of solid material.
Praccal tests have shown that if the concentraon increases over 20-25% in weight, the increase in wear tendency is less. This
is thought to be due to the fact that parcles collide with each other to a greater extent instead of against the walls of the pipe.
With increasing size and density of the parcles, the wear has been found to increase proporonately. This is a consequence of the
increase in kinec energy. The role of the parcles prole has not been precisely determined, but observaons show that irregular
sharp edged parcles cause greater wear than regular almost spherical-shaped parcles.
Even installaon: When transporng abrasive materials it is important that the slurry line is installed as evenly as possible
and with the fewest possible irregularies. Each irregularity will increase wear at the exposed point and also increase the ow resis-
tance in the system. In the installaon of bends and loops, the largest possible radius should be used. An o#en used rule of thumb
is that the radius of the bends is to be made at least 10 x ID. Internal welding ridges, and carelessly installed anges can also cause
unnecessary wear. With changes in pipe dimensions, conical adaptors should be used. To minimise wear it is important to give the
bends as big a radius as possible.
Inclinaon: Producon stops or close downs cause a specic problem. If the inclinaon is too big, an accumulaon of
the parcles will occur at low points, which might give problems at the starng moment In smaller pipe systems there is a possibility
of pumping clean water in before closing down. Un-expected producon stops may be helped by an extra facility or supplying power
as well as extra pumps. Another opon is to open the line at low points. These smaller pipe systems o#en contain vercal distances.
Another way to eliminate the risk of accumulaon during producon stops is to limit the inclinaon of the lining. This normally will
be done with long-distance transportaon of solid parcles.
