Una hazaa olmpica en el estadio

Olmpico de Helsinki esta noche, donde
Bruce y la E Street Band hacen real el
mito, realizando finalmente lo que la
leyenda dice que han hecho durante aos:
dar un concierto de cuatro horas. Cuatro
horas y cinco minutos, realmente, el
concierto ms largo de Springsteen hasta
la fecha por un pequeo margen; y eso sin
contar siquiera la actuacin acstica
especial antes del concierto principal.

Cuando Bruce cantaba Light of Day, como respuesta a un cartel pidindola, y
100 millas, 200 millas, 300 millas, yo saba exactamente lo que l quera
decir; yo haba viajado 5000 de ellas, desde Singapur a Escandinavia, para seguirle
a l y a la banda a travs de la regin y hasta el cierre de
la gira europea. Saba que estaba en el tren adecuado
con ese sentido concierto en Oslo, y poda sentir las
expectativas creadas mientras viajbamos desde el este,
particularmente tras el rompedor segundo concierto en
Gotemburgo. Claro, no hubo campaa meditica,
primeras pginas, ni secciones especiales como en
Noruega o Suecia, pero mientras 50 000 de nosotros nos
dirigamos al estadio Olmpico de Helsinki, la misma
pregunta rondaba por la cabeza de cada uno de
nosotros: rompera la barrera de las cuatro horas?
Puede el que muchos consideran ahora el mejor concierto hasta hoy o de la
dcada ser superado?
La respuesta es s, y no, lo que es el encanto de estas legendarias giras: nunca
consigues lo que anticipas, y digo esto en un sentido positivo. Pero primero, un acto
de apertura un trovador en solitario llamado Springsteen subi al escenario a las
seis y cuarto de la tarde con una guitarra (y una armnica que nunca funcion y que
fue descartada rpidamente). El estadio estaba a un tercio de su capacidad en ese
momento, y Bruce demostr por qu la paciencia (y la fe) poda ser recompensada,
tocando un listado en formato acstico de cinco canciones para los asiduos, que
incluy tres estrenos en la gira: Ill Work for your Love, Leap of Faith y Blinded
by the Light. De principio a fin, l agradeci los rostros que reconoca y el amor de
sus seguidores ms acrrimos; Todos vosotros arruinados y sin techo, y es culpa
ma! Tras treinta minutos de calentamiento durante los cuales pareca como si
luchara contra un resfriado (durante el resto de la tarde tosi, se son la nariz y
cogi varias veces pauelos de papel) paso otros diez minutos estrechando
manos, charlando y haciendo muy felices a algunas mujeres dndoles besos en la
mejilla. Era difcil dudar que el concierto de esa noche no sera especialmente
extraordinario y estratosfrico cuando abandon el escenario.

 Toda la banda sali a las 07:54 de la tarde y arrancaron con Rockin all over the
World, el primero de los cinco los contamos todos! estrenos de la gira en este
ltimo concierto en el continente. Sin perder el ritmo durante las siguientes ocho
canciones, la banda avanz en tropel, cancin a cancin, incluyendo un pico
Prove it all Night con la intro de 1978, durante la cual Bruce hizo un solo feroz con
el habitual apoyo del elegante teclado del Profesor.
Mientras canciones como Because the Night renacan con ese cortante de
guitarra que nunca te cansa, y Darlington County fue ese petardo en una reunin
que nunca te cansa. Loose Ends y Be True fueron refrescantes subidas de
marcha, y el acto de pasar lista en My City of Ruins tuvo unos pocos toques ms
de meditacin que de costumbre: Voy a quedarme aqu mismo, donde el tiempo no
pueda atraparme.
Springsteen estuvo ms divertido con los carteles que pedan canciones aqu que
en los otros conciertos nrdicos, bromeando sobre que los estadounidenses no
saban nada acerca del transporte pblico antes de tocar Does this Bus Stop at
82nd Street? y juguetear vagamente con la idea de tocar Secret Garden antes de
interpretar en su lugar Back in your Arms. La conmovedora interpretacin lleg
directamente a esa parte del corazn a donde no llega habitualmente el sol, los
versos intercalados con monlogos sobre esperanzas, sueos y ese algo especial,
pero terminando en esa nota alta que t obtienes a menudo cuando Bruce est en el
asiento del conductor.
Cuando el estreno de la gira de Detroit Medley hizo su gran aparicin como una
rodilla deslizndose por el escenario despus de Born to Run, seguida de Glory
Days, empezabas a mirar el reloj como los aficionados al ftbol en un partido y, tan
seguro como el tictac del reloj en la pared, hiciste los clculos y supiste que el final
no andaba cerca. Tras Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Bruce sealo enfticamente
que Los fineses no estn finalizados! y felizmente obligado por un cartel de
peticin de cancin a estrenar en la gira el tema de Steve I dont Wanna Go
Home, golpe con el codo a su amigo repetidamente para que tomara el mando y
el micrfono para una desnuda interpretacin a do. Aunque hubo problemas en lo
tocante a las partes de participacin del pblico en Higher and Higher, el ltimo
estrena de la gira (Bruce termin pidiendo cantantes, ayudadme! para enderezar
las partes omitidas), era innegable que
todos saban que hacer durante Twist and
Shout. Cuando dieron las tres horas y
cincuenta y ocho minutos , un miembro del
equipo sali a decirle a Springsteen lo que
estaba pasando, y l pareci sorprendido
claro, eso solo le motiv a sacar a su
colaborador ms estrecho a donde nunca
antes haba estado. Por lo pronto, Jon
Landau ech una mano con la guitarra;
durante casi diez minutos estuvo viviendo
en el futuro del rock and roll.

 Soy una corredora de maratn y he finalizado una media carrera de Ironman
[Hombre de Hierro], pero la proeza de resistencia de Bruce el martes por la noche
nunca flaque en cuanto a pasin, dedicacin, y la eterna responsabilidad de enviar
a todos a casa locos de alegra con la salvacin del rock and roll en sus espritus.

An Olympic feat tonight at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium, as Bruce and the E

Street Band make the myth real, finally doing what the legends say they've done
for years: play a four-hour show. Four hours and five minutes, actually,
Springsteen's longest show to date by a fair margin and that's not even
counting a special acoustic set before the main event. Desiree Koh reports.
When Bruce launched into "Light of Day," a sign request, and "100 miles... 200
miles... 300 miles...," I knew exactly what he meant I had traveled 5,000 of
them from Singapore to Scandinavia to follow him and the band across the region
and close Europe out. I knew I was on the right train with that heartfelt show in
Oslo, and I could feel the expectations build as we traveled east, particularly
after Gothenburg's groundbreaking (if not stadium-breaking) second show. Sure,
there was no media blitz, page ones, and special sections as in Norway and
Sweden, but as 50,000 of us made our way into Helsinki's Olympic Stadium, the
same questions roamed through everyones minds: will they break four hours?
Can what many now considered the best show of the tour so far or of the
decade be topped?
The answer is yes, and no, which is the beauty of these legendary tours: you
never get what you anticipate, and I mean that in a good way. But first, an
opening act a solo troubadour named Bruce Springsteen took the stage at
6:15pm with a guitar (and a harmonica that never worked out and was discarded
quickly). The stadium was about one-third full at this point, and Bruce showed
why patience (and faith) would be rewarded, playing an acoustic five-song set for
"the regulars," which included three tour premieres: "I'll Work For Your Love,"
"Leap of Faith," and "Blinded By the Light." Throughout, he acknowledged the
faces he recognized and the love of his more hard-core fans "You're all broke
and homeless, and it's my fault!" After the 30-minute warm-up during which
he sounded like he was fighting a cold (for the rest of the evening, he coughed,
blew his nose and had tissue paper on hand several times) he spent another
ten shaking hands, chatting, and making some ladies very happy with kisses on
the cheek. It was tough to doubt that that night's show would be anything but
less than phenomenal and stratospherically special when he left the stage.
The full band came out at 7:54pm and powered right into "Rockin' All Over the
World," the first of five count them all! tour premieres for this last show on
the continent. Without skipping a beat for the next eight songs, the band surged
from song to song, including an epic "Prove It All Night" with the 1978 intro
during which Bruce soloed ferociously with the usual classy support from the
Professor's keys.
While songs such as "Because the Night" soared with that Lofgren slashing
guitar aria you never tire of, and "Darlington County" was that firecracker of a
hootenanny you can't get enough of, "Loose Ends" and "Be True" were refreshing
change-ups, and the "My City of Ruins" roll call got a few more touching
ruminations than usual: "Im going to stand right here where time can't get to
me."
 Springsteen had more fun with sign requests than at the other Nordic shows,
joking that Americans knew nothing about public transportation before calling
for "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?" and vaguely toying with the idea of
"Secret Garden" before going with "Back in Your Arms" instead. The soulful
rendition drove straight to that part of the heart where the sun doesn't usually
reach, verses interspersed with monologues about hopes, dreams, and that
special someone, but ending on that high note that you often get to when Bruce is
in the driver's seat.
When the tour premiere of "Detroit Medley" made its grand appearance like a
knee slide across the stage after "Born to Run," followed by "Glory Days," you
started looking at your watch like soccer fans at a match and, sure as the ticking
of the clock on the wall, you did the math and knew the end wasnt near. After
"Tenth Avenue Freeze-out," Bruce pointed out emphatically that "The Finns
aren't finished!" and happily obliged a sign request for the tour premiere of the
Steve-penned "I Don't Want to Go Home," nudging his friend repeatedly to take
the lead and mic on a stripped-down, duet rendition. Although there were snags
in the audience participation portion of "Higher and Higher," the final tour
premiere (Bruce ended up calling for "singers, help me out!" to straighten the
parts out), there was no denying that everyone knew what to do during "Twist
and Shout." At the three-hour-and-fifty-eight-minute mark, a crew member ran
out to tell Bruce what was happening, and he seemed surprised of course, that
only motivated him to take this favorite closer where it's never been before. For
one, Jon Landau was helping out on guitar for nearly 10 minutes, he was
living in the future of rock 'n' roll.
I am a marathon runner and half-Ironman finisher, but Bruces feat of
endurance Tuesday night never once flagged in passion, dedication, and undying
commitment to send everyone home delirious with rock 'n' roll salvation in their
spirits. It was all that Helsinki no, Heavensinki would allow.
