storing them in public librar-
ies, I have to get involved.
The third-biggest library on the
planet is in Canada. The Otta-
wa Library and Archives Can-
ada website states that there
are 20 million books published
in various languages in the li-
brary, and storage costs $95
million. The last time the page
was updated was in 2014,
and I imagine that cost has in-
creased since then. The aver-
age e-book is 2.6 megabytes.

to around 50 terabytes in size,
and it would cost just $4000
per month with Google Cloud.
There is an insane price gap
between storing hardcover
books and e-books.

We cant just destroy the old
books and close the libraries,
but we can start to publish new
books in one of the e-book
formats. Storage is not only a
problem for big libraries, but
also an important problem for
ordinary readers. With most
people living in smaller apart-
ments, storage is becoming
more problematic.
An e-book reader with 4 gi-
gabytes of storage, costing
around 80 bucks, can host
more than 1500 e-books.
Storing that number even in
paperback format would cost
a lot more because of the
 shelf space required.
Second, e-books are health-
ier than you think. Many be-
lieve they damage the eyes,
but that is not the case.
8 E-books do not work like tab-
lets or computers as they use
a totally different technology
called eyelid, thanks to which
the light is not shone direct-
ly into your eyes. The light
source are positioned near
the screen and shines on the
surface before reaching your
eyes, basically working like a
traditional book, but they are
healthier because they also
have their own lights, which
adapt to the environment in
which you are reading and tire
your eyes less. New e-books
can also adapt to the vibra-
tions on a bus, train, or street-
car. While your hands are
shaking, e-books stabilise the
text and save your eyes from
getting tired. Reading books
not only causes visual im-
pairments, but also damages
the musculoskeletal system,
particularly in childhood. Chil-
dren and teenagers have to
carry a lot of heavy hardcov-
er textbooks from classroom
to classroom. If they want to
read a book, the weight will
be increased. According to
Simmons College professor
Shelly Goodgold, 55% of fifth-
through eighth-grade students
she surveyed carry backpack
loads weighing more than
15% of their body weight.
One-third of those students
said theyve suffered back
pain. The American Academy
of Pediatrics has recommend-
ed that children carry no more
than 1020% of their weight
in a backpack. However, the
average e-book device is just
around 350 grams (it is getting
lighter with every new model)
which equals 1% of a childs
weight.
Moreover, they are easier to
use. While you are reading
books, even if it is in your own
language, you dont know or
cant be sure about the mean-
ing of the words sometimes.
If you are using your smart-
phone or a computer, it takes
1 to 2 minutes to find the
meaning and be sure which is
the one you are looking for
even longer if you use an
old-style dictionary. Howev-
er, e-book readers have their
own dictionaries, allowing the
user to tap on the word and
see the meaning. If you need
to check 5 words on a page,
you will save 5 to 10 minutes.
Taking notes and finding them
will be easier too. When you
want to annotate, you need a
pen to write and a sticky note
to put it on for every single an-
notation. When you need to
find the annotation, it takes a
lot of time to find it. But with an
e-book reader, you can take
notes and find them easily.
As a result, there is no logic
to getting stuck with the old
ways. Humanity is going to
change its reading habits any-
way. Give yourself a present
and try to decide which is the 9

an e-book reader today.

or should not do when travelling to other countries
or when being a host to overseas visitors.
Imagine yourself realizing
your dream trip to a fantas-
tic place. Your flight is on
time, the weather is exactly

and the hotel is amazing yet
exceptional value for mon-
ey, but there is one problem:
you cannot speak the local
language and the locals are
not able to speak your lan-
guage. So you start to deal
with this situation by using
one of the most important
abilities that a human be-
ing hasinstinct. Howev-
er, when you flash the OK
sign, people look at you as
if they are so pissed off,
and you cant understand
why. At the end of your trip,
you meet a local friend and
when you use the same
OK sign with him, he tells
you to avoid it because the
meaning of this gesture is
absolutely impolite.
Last year, I invited my Taiwan-
ese friend Nathan to come
over and spend fifteen days
in Brazil with me. He accept-
ed immediately because I
could be his local guide, es-
pecially as he doesnt speak
Portuguese and there are few
people who are able to speak
English (or Mandarin) in Bra-
zil. When he arrived in So
Paulo, we went to Curitiba,
my hometown. Men greeted
him with a firm handshake
and women with a kiss on the
cheek, which instantaneous-
ly made him blush. After my
culture shock when Id first
met him a few years before
in Peru, I learned that Brazil-
ian greetings in most cases
are considered invasive be-
cause our personal space is
lot smaller than that of most
Asians. Nevertheless, I just
tried to explain to him that
kissing or hugging someone
is quite normal in my country,
and he shouldnt feel embar-
rassed because it wasnt his
fault.
Later that day, my grand-
mother invited us to have din-
ner at her house. The food
was perfect, and it was evi-
dent my friend had become
more comfortable when he
burped at the table. Firstly,
my grandmother looked at
my cousin and started to rep-
rimand him loudly in front of
our guest. A few seconds af-
ter, she realized that my cous-

to skip the awkward moment
that ensued, I had to explain
to my family what Id learned
during my first meal in Peru

On the last day of Nathans
trip, my mother decided to
give him a gift. She spent
many hours at the mall trying
to find the perfect present that
would remind him of his days
in Brazil. So when my mother
presented the gift, Nathan just
said, Thank you, and didnt
open the it in front of us. My
mom was so frustrated be-
cause she wasnt able to see
his reaction. In Brazil, open-
ing a gift in front of the per-
son who gave it to you is very
common. However, many
times we have to pretend that
we like the gift and tell some
white lies.
These three embarrassing
situations taught me how im-
portant it is to know what we 11
should do or should not do
when travelling to other coun-
tries or when being a host to
overseas visitors.
Lets start with the greetings.
Handshakes are commonly
accepted as a universal greet-
ing. According to CT Business
Travel, in Canada, the USA,
the UK, Russia, Turkey and
India a firm handshake is ex-
 pected when meeting some-
one for the first time. In some
countries, you should com-
bine a handshake with other

types of greetings, as in India,
where you do a namastea
traditional Indian greeting or
gesture of respect, made by
bringing the palms together
before the face or chest and
bowing. In Japan, the most
common greeting is a bow, in-
clining the head to show rev-
erence.
It is important to highlight that
in many countries in Asia,
people tend to have a partic-
ular respect for the elderly.
Hence, people should always
greet the most senior person
in the room first.
After meeting someone, its
common to invite colleagues
or new friends for a meal.
This is another hot/trending
topic which needs a special
attention. Dining etiquette
gives us directions about the
attitudes that should be avoid-
ed. For example, in China, its
extremely rude to start eating
before the host, whereas in
Brazil the hosts will usually
ask you to start eating first. In
the UK, the host is expected
to raise a toast first. In Japan,
you should toast those who
are older than you first.
In South Korea, entertaining
guests is very important, and
its quite normal to be invited
to karaoke after dinner for a
few hours.
In Asia, all the meals are
served with chopsticks, and
an important tip for Western
travellers is to not leave the
chopsticks sticking upright
in the rice as it is considered
an offer to the spirit of a dead
person.
Finally, one of the most con-
troversial topics about eti-
quettegiving gifts. Should
I open the gift in front of the
person who gave me it?
Should I pretend that I like it
even if I hate it? Should I hand
the present over with the right
hand, the left or both? Do I
have to wrap it?
There are different rules about
this topic. If you are in Taiwan,
China, Japan or South Korea,
you should never open the gift
in front of the person in order
to avoid unwelcome (if invol-
untary) facial expressions. If
you are in South America, you
will be expected to open the
gift the moment you receive it
and, if you dont like it or you
already have one, its polite to
pretend otherwise.
When giving and receiving
a gift, you should use both
hands in Asian countries.
Wrapping a present is essen-
tial because the value of the
gift is less important than the
kindness with which it is pre-
sented.

 Where the money will go

The money collected as a result of the sales will be

shared into two purposes:

70% will be donated to Torontonian buskers in the

subway, in order to recognize and encourage their
performances.

The other 30% will go to a lucky prize draw winner

among students and ILSC staff** who buy a copy
of Future Perfect Issue 23.

Each extra dollar you pay gives you an extra entry.

* The lucky winner will be raffled on January 27th (Friday) of 2017.

** The students who were involved in the creation of this magazine will not be
included in the prize draw.
