METHOD OF DETERMINING QUANTITIES OF CONCRETE INGREDIENTS

Example:
Determine the number of bags of cement (1 cu.ft. = 1 bag) and
the quantities of the other aggregates required for 100 cu.m.
of concrete of 1;2;4 mix with the following given data:

Cement: sp.gr. = 3.1 unit wt = 94 lbs/cu.ft.

Sand: sp.gr. = 2.65 unit wt = 105 lbs/cu.ft.
Gravel: sp.gr. = 2.5 unit wt = 95 lbs/cu.ft.
Water: Use 7 gallons to every bag of cement

Solution: Volume = (unit wt/W) x relative proportion

Cement = 94 x 1 = 0.49 cu.ft.
3.10(62.4)

Sand = 105 x2= 1.27 cu.ft.

2.65(62.4)

Gravel = 95 x4= 2.44 cu.ft.

2.5 (62.4)

Water = 7 = 0.94 cu.ft.

7.48

Total Volume per batch = 5.14 cu.ft.

Required Quantities:
Cement: 3529 = 687 bags
5.14

Sand: 687 x2= 39 cu.m.

3.28^3

Gravel: 687 x4= 78 cu.m.

3.28^3

Water: 687 x 7 = 4809 gals.

Estimating Procedures:
1. Determine total surface area
2. Divide area by required factor
3. Round to closest values
10 or less . . . round to 1
11 to 50 ... round to 5
51 to 100 . . . round to 10
over 100 ... round to 15
For single partition use rounding as is. For double partitions solve for total boards and
round according to schedule given under item 3.
