Reflective Essay

Essays are not my strongest suit and I found myself struggling this year creating a well

written essay. All essays I had to write needed to contain research, well written thesis ,clear

counterarguments and many more element that needed to be include. After revising each essay I

noticed simple mistakes I could of avoided if I spend more time revising. I'm not happy with the

results of my essays but I'm happy I took this course because I realized what I need to improve

on. Analyzing each essay made me realize what I was missing and what I wasn't. Throughout

this course we did a total of three essay, rhetorical, ethnographic and literary analysis and revised

each one of them.

The first essay was rhetorical, meaning a relating to or concerned with the art of rhetoric.

Our prompt was to choose a Latino cultural mural around the Los Angeles area and expressing

the mural through a political or social view. The mural I choose was, The Wall that Speaks

Sings and Shouts, by Paul Botello located in east Los Angeles. This essay was hard for me to

write because Ive never analyzed a mural before. I didn't know where to start because this essay

was based on your interpretation of the mural. I had to learn and interpret shapes, something Ive

never done. After writing my essay the errors I committed where, not having a so what in my

thesis and poor topic sentences. I knew this was something I needed to improve more because

murals around Los Angeles are common.

The second and third essay were, ethnographic and literary analysis. Ethnography is a

genre of writing that uses fieldwork to provide a descriptive study of human societies and literary

analysis is an argumentative analysis about a literary work. Our literary work was a book called

Still Water Saints by Alex Espinoza. Both of these essays were different from the first because it

required you to do more intense research. The reason it required you to conduct more research is

because your trying to argue or convince your opinion to the readers. For both of theses essays I

had trouble with topic sentences. I had strong thesis statements but did not support it by adding

the topic sentences. Another factor I struggled in both essays was not creating a quote

sandwich. A quote sandwich is introducing the quote, the quote, and explaining what the

quote is trying to explain and how it connects. In theses two essays I was not happy with my

grade because I didnt have enough time to revise it. This lead to a lot of grammatical errors and

missed commas.

Even though this semester I found it very difficult to conduct a well written essay, I'm

happy I took this course because I felt that I learn a lot as a writer. I learned how to analyze a

mural and many more other factors I mentioned throughout this essay. In this course I felt that

we argued and discussed a lot of important topics that were relevant to today's issues. An

example would be body image issues, being an immigrant to America and many more topics.

Many of the assignments had to correlate with being a Latino descent and found that easy to

relate and write being a Latina women myself.
