ROSTER OF OHIO SOLDIERS IN WAR OF 1812, Vol. 2.

Pages 267-268
ROLL OF CAPT JOHN RUSSELL'S COMPANY (Probably from Ross County)
Served from July 28, until September 9, 1813.
Capt. John Russell
Lieut. David McMullin
Ensign William Carpenter
Privates -
Shute, Richard
The War of 1812 seems to bring together a number of significant aspects related to the
45 acres of farm land in Warren County, IN.

1. Governor and General William Henry Harrison and his army most likely crossed the
creek somewhere towards the east side of the 45 acres when they marched to the Battle
of Tippecanoe fought on November 7, 1811. About a mile north of the farm there is a
sign and an old wagon path that claims to identify the path of Harrisons Army. The
Army definitely marched along the west side of the Wabash River in the area of the
farm. A significant number of trees near the river appears to have caused the army to
march a little farther to the west, in all likelihood crossing the farm. Byron Berger, who
has farmed the land for many years indicated to me that Harrisons Army crossed the
creek near the east side of the farm.

2. Rachael and I are double descended from Richard Shute. Richard owned land about 1
mile south of the farm. Richard purchased land in Vermillion County, Indiana, 08
February 1831, Certificate 16317, for "the west half of the south east quarter of section
6 in township 19 north of range 9 west in the district of lands subject to sale at
Crawfordsville, Indiana, containing 80 acres. The transfer was signed by Andrew
Jackson, President of the United States.

3. Perrysville, Indiana, was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of
the Battle of Lake Erie, who was under Commodore Isaac Chauncey in the Great Lakes
during the War of 1812. He is remembered for the words on his battle flag, "Don't Give
Up the Ship" and his message to General William Henry Harrison which reads in part,
"We have met the enemy and they are ours; " The town of Perrysville was baned after
Commodore Perry. Perrysville, Indiana, is located southeast of Gessie, Indiana, where
my mother was born. Her grandfather, DA Fox, helped build the high school there.
Gessie is directly south of the farm about a mile or two. Richard Shute owned land
in that area. A number of the Gouty family, Elias, Thomas, are buried at the Hicks
Cemetery in or near Perrysville. Been a long time since I have been there. Richard Shute
and Hannah McCartney Shute were members of the Predestinarian Baptist Church that
was built in Gessie in 1853 (Church was 20 x 30). Richard Shute donated the land for
Hopewell Cemetery in 1839. His daughter Rebecca was the first person to be buried on
that property. I have a number of ancestors buried there. You could look out of the
church building and supposedly see the graves of men who had died later in their lives
after being in the Battle of Tippecanoe with General/President Harrison.

4. It is evident that Commodore Isaac Chauncey was the first owner of some land
adjacent the farm in Warren County. He was one of the greatest US Navy sailors in
history. Three destroyers have been named after him. It is clear he knew Commodore
Oliver Hazard Perry and both Commodores knew Governor and General (and later
President) William Henry Harrison.

5. The earliest settlers in Warren and Vermillion Counties, Vermillion is just south of
Warren County, came in the very late 1820s to early 1830s. For whatever reason some of
the War of 1812 veterans came to the area at that time. Commodore Isaac Chauncey
purchased some land adjacent the farm from the U S Government on September 10,
1838 (President Martin VanBuren) when he patented the land, although the patent was
not recorded until 1914!

6. We now have one of the greatest US Navy sailors in history who owned land adjacent
the farm and President William Henry Harrison and his Army who crossed the creek on
the farm in 1811. All this on 45 acres that is out in the middle of nowhere!!!!

Ancestors of Richard Shute

Generation No. 1

1. Richard Shute, born October 16, 1792 in Dover, England; died January 12, 1852.
He was the son of 2. John Shute and 3. Susan. He married (1) Hannah McCartney
March 31, 1814 in Scioto Co., OH.. She was the daughter of Daniel McCartney and
Sarah.

Notes for Richard Shute:

Richard and his brother John/William immigrated with their father John in 1802. His
mother Susan remained in England. Brother John/William was bound out until he
became 21 years of age, he was lost trace of and no family has been found.

During the War of 1812, Richard traveled up the Wabash River Valley as far as
Tippicanoe. He liked the lay of the land and vowed to return.

He enlisted 19 Sep 1812 in the War of 1812 and served under Capt. Peter Bacus with
General William Henry Harrison. He was discharged 03 March 1813 and returned to
Scioto County, Ohio.

He migrated to the Gessie (IN.) area with wife Hannah and four children, William,
Daniel, John and Ephriam in October of 1829. Settled on land near Spring Creek,
known as the Howard Chapel vicinity.

He and Hannah were members of the Predestinarian Baptist Church that was built in
Gessie in 1853 (Church was 20'x30')

Donated land for the Hopewell Cemetery where daughter Rebecca was the first person
to be buried there.

The following are extracts of letters written by Rev. James Gilruth, a Methodist
Minister, who grew up and married in the Hanging Rock-French Grant area, present
day Green Township of Scioto County and Hamilton & Elizabeth Townships of
Lawrence Co., OH. The time period was from 1797 when his father, old Thomas
Gilruth, moved into the area onward. When James was about 80 and a year before he
died, he wrote to the Ironton Register, letters telling what he remembered of the old
settlers:

To the Ironton, Ohio Register, Feb 1, 1872 "Below the Lamberts lived an old Englishman
by the name of Shoot. His given name I have forgotten, and that of his wife I never
knew. He had a son maned Richard, who, after his father's death lived with Thomas
Gilruth, in the French Grant, until he came of age. Mr. Shoot was a wagonmaker, the
first and only one of trade in this or either of the valleys next above or below. But as
wagons were very little used among the early settlers, he found little or no employment
as a wagonmaker, but being a strong, industrious and energetic man, and also learned
how to handle a spade, he did a great deal of ditching of ponds and swales--a thing as
much needed for health as for profit."

Ironton Register, Mar. 14, 1872 "About 1807 or 1808, nexgt below, settled Daniel
McCartney, who after living some time on the bank of the river, moved back to the
center of the bottom, where the road now runs. His wife's name was Sarah_____. Their
childrens names were Hannah, William, Daniel, Sarah, Vincent and Peter. Hannah
married Vincent Shute: William married ________Davidson, (in KY); Sarah married
John Stewart; William and Stewart settled on John's Creek a tributary of Symmes Creek.
McCartney was a member of the Baptist Church and lived by farming. In his day his
was considered one of the best hands withthe scythe in these parts. After living for
many years and proving himself, he with the younger members of the family, also his
son-in-law Richard Shute, moved to Indiana and settled near Covington, on the
Wabash, where Shute from being a poor orphan boy, became owner of sone nine or ten
quarter sections of land with other things in abundance."

Richard Shute and the Gouty / Older farm

in Warren County, Indiana
The War of 1812 seems to bring together a number of significant aspects related
to the 45 acres of farm land in Warren County, Indiana, where Mavis Lorene Gouty
grew up. Richard Shute probably crossed part of that land in 1811 with General William

at the Hicks Cemetery in or near Perrysville. Been a long time since I have been there. I
believe, may have this wrong, that Mr. Hicks named Perrysville after Commodore Perry
and is the one who donated the land for Hicks Cemetery. Richard Shute and Hannah
McCartney Shute were members of the Predestinarian Baptist Church that was built in

10, 1838 (President Martin VanBuren) when he patented the land, although the patent
was not recorded until 1914!

6. We now have one of the greatest US Navy sailors in history as an owner of land
adjacent the 45 acres of the farm and President William Henry Harrison and his Army
who crossed the creek on the farm in 1811. All this on 45 acres that is out in the middle
of nowhere!!!!
