(About 1792 to 12 January 1853)

Hannah McCartney, born February 3, 1796 in Virginia. She married Richard Shute in
Scioto County, Ohio on March 31, 1814. Richard was born October 6, 1792, in Dover, England.
Richard served in the War of 1812. The family migrated to Highland Township, Vermillion
County, Indiana in October of 1829. They lived on the banks of the Wabash River. They had 14
children who were Mahala (1815), William (1817), Sarah Ann (1818), Daniel (1820), Susannah
(1822), Mary Ann (1825), John (1826), Ephraim (1827), Minervia (1829), Jehu (1831), Joseph
(1834), Elizabeth (1835), Rebecca (1837), and Richard Harrison (1840). Richard died January
12, 1853, and Hannah died August 26, 1872, both in Vermillion County, Indiana. They were
buried in the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Highland Township, Vermillion
County, Indiana, along with a number of their descendants.

Census: The 1880 IN Census for Elias B. Gouty and Elizabeth Shute Gouty indicates
that
Elizabeth's father, who was Richard Shute, was born in England.

settled in the year 1829. His wife was Hannah McCartney. They had a family of 15 children.
Mahala became the wife of William Nicholas.

There is a book or pamphlet at the Indiana Historical Society that describes or


studies the trip up the Wabash River by troops under General William Henry Harrison.
Supposedly, Richard Shute accompanied them.

History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches: page 289, Richard Shute settled
in the county in 1830. Page 389, Richard Shute was a native of England, coming to America
when a lad of ten years, his family settling in Ohio in an early day. He was married in Lawrence
County, Ohio, to Hannah McCartney, and to them were born nine children, five of whom were
born in Vermillion County. Richard Shute died January 12, 1853, his widow surviving almost
twenty years, her death occurring August 26, 1872.

Census: The 1880 Indiana Census for Elias B. Gouty and Elizabeth Shute
Gouty Indicates that Elizabeth's mother, who was Hannah
McCartney, was born in Maryland. Hannah Shute is listed in the
1860 Vermillion County, Indiana Census as age 64 and born in
Virginia. Richard Harrison Shute was listed in the same census as
age 20.

(Note: Daniel McCartney is listed in the Family Tree Maker
