Step 1: Drawing
Tape your Watercolour Paper to a flat surface on all four
sides. Then using the image on the last page of this PDF as reference, lightly draw up your image with a Graphite Pencil.
With Watercolour, work from
light to dark.
Step 2: Underpainting
Using your Squirrelon #8 Brush and Ochre, roughly block in
the rocks, grass and bottom of the sky, leaving the ocean and Lighthouse free of paint. Add more water to lighter areas such as the top of the sky and the top of the hill.
Step 3: Sky
Paint in a thick horizontal line of Ultramarine Blue at the top
of the page. Then dip your Brush in the water and gently brush from side to side adding more water as you move down the page. Leave the Lighthouse free of paint.
Step 4: Ocean
Using curved lines, paint in the ocean with a mixture of
Viridian Green and Ultramarine Blue, thinning it out with water as you move down. Gently scrape back areas with your Palette Knife to create waves.

Step 5: Rocks
Make a Paynes Grey from Black and Prussian Blue. Apply
a thick layer over a small section of rock. Before the paint has dried, scrape back sections at different angles to create the look of rocks. Repeat this process on the entire rock area.
Step 6: Grass
Mix a Light Green from Lemon Yellow and Pythalo Blue.
Roughly apply this over the area where you want the grass to be, leaving areas of the Ochre showing through. Darken the mixture with more Pythalo Blue and paint it into the areas of shadow.
Step 7: Horizon and Glaze
When the ocean is completely dry, create a Dark Blue
from Prussian Blue and Viridian and apply this over the top of the ocean, thinning with water as you move down. Now make an Orange from Vermillion and Yellow and paint it in horizontal streaks along the horizon. As you move up the paper, add more water to soften the colour.
Step 8: Lighthouse
Start by painting in the darkest parts of the lighthouse with
a mixture of Ultramarine Blue and Black. Then water the mixture down and apply in on the faces of the building in shadow. Finally water the mixture down again until it is barely visible on the White of the Paper and paint in the other faces of the lighthouse.
Until next time...
