Step 1: Drawing

First tape a page of Watercolour paper to the board and

draw your flowers in with a HB pencil. A photo and key line
for you to trace or copy can be found on the last pages of
this PDF.

Step 2: Painting the Yellow flowers

With clean water dampen the whole sheet of paper with

your 50mm Taklon Brush and pad the excess off with a paper
towel, this will help the paint flow and make the next wash
lighter. Paint the flowers with a watered down Lemon Yellow.
Then while the Yellow is still wet, build up the tones on the
Lilies by adding a little Brilliant Red to the Lemon Yellow and
dropping it in.

Step 3: Painting the Iris

Create a mix from Phthalo Blue, Crimson and a little water.

Paint this colour on to each Iris, leaving the yellow parts free
of colour. Build up the purple by adding layers of darker
purple (just add more blue and less water to make it darker)
in areas on the flowers.

Step 4: Painting the Vase and Tablecloth

Paint the vase with clean water, then lay in some

Ultramarine on to the left side of the vase and Phthalo Blue
on to the other side. Lay some Crimson in to the
Ultramarine and let the colours mix together.

Paint the table cloth with a very watery Ultramarine. Let this
dry partially and paint another coat where the shadow
would be. Mix a little Crimson in to the Ultramarine where the
darkest shadow is.

Step 5: Painting the Leaves

Paint a mix of Medium Yellow and Ultramarine on the leaves,

starting from the bottom and adding water as you move up.
Then mix Medium Yellow with Phthalo and paint in on to the
Iris stalks. You can add as many layers as you like to build up
the shapes.

Step 6: Painting the Background

Turn the painting upside down and lay clean water in to the
background. Using Brilliant Red with a spot of Ultramarine,
lay a graded wash from the table to the top of the page.
Once dry, add a little Ultramarine to the Brilliant Red and
glaze this over the previous coat.

Step 7: Adding Detail

Create a mix of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine and paint it on

to the table. Then with that mix, add some shadows to the
leaves and middle of the gerberas. Finally, you can add
detail with your fine tip markers, to wherever you think it
needs it.

Until next time...
