Overview
Summary:

By applying the skills that we have learned in the last 3 years as engineering
students of WCTA, we will design and build a multipurpose and modern shed for the
WCTA greenhouse. The shed will provide students a place to work, teachers a place
to store tools and materials, and most importantly a learning experience that entails
a hands on experience of a formal Civil works/ Engineering project.

Goals:

In designing and building the proposed shed we hope to accomplish a variety of

goals. The first goal is that we want to apply and showcase the engineering skills
learned throughout highschool such as computer aided drafting and design process.
The second goal is that we want to partake in a senior project that will actually help
the school in some way; by making this proposed shed the greenhouse class will
have a place to store things like wood and a place to work on projects. Lastly we
want to work on a project that the school can show to others to attract students,
garner in a more improved image of the engineering program, and use as reference
to get funding for future projects.

Details
Who?
Nebyu Haile:

I am junior soon to be senior in the engineering program at WCTA. My father was an

engineer and similar to him I am very passionate about becoming a structural
engineer or water resources engineer. I have personally gone above and beyond on
almost all my engineering project whether it be learning how to use AutoCad and
Revit or helping others finish their projects. I am very dedicated to this project and
willing to work on it over summer even along my busy schedule between
scholarship applications, full time engineering internship, and studying for next
year's curriculum. By the end of the year my GPA will be 4.0 UW and 4.8 W, if that's
not enough to show my character I feel confident that any teacher I have had will
vouch for my dedication and commitment.

Dhruv Luhar:

I am a class of 2018 student in the engineering program with a current weighted

GPA of 4.3. I come from a family of engineers and am extremely interested in
completing this engineering project. Additionally, my out of class experience
working on cars, bicycles, and motorcycles makes me the perfect candidate for this
project. My years at WCTA have taught me to manage my time to work diligently to
accomplish goals. Overall, I feel that this capstone will be a valuable experience
give me an advantage in the years to come.

What?
Dhruv and I want to design and build a multifunction and modern shed for the green
house. The shed is planned to be approximately 12 by 16 and will be used for
storage and as a place for future greenhouse projects to be completed like building
tables and shelves. The shed will also possibly be solar powered thought that is
another student's project and depends solely on his dedication to the project.

Why?
The fundamental reasoning behind project is one that seems to be a consistent
theme at WCTA-- space. When this greenhouse was designed, the engineers likely
did not account for brilliantly ambitious students and teachers we have at WCTA.
The greenhouse undertakes many different projects that require storage and place
to work. By building this shed both of those problems would be fulfilled, all while

increasing the efficiency of the greenhouse and motivating students to work. In
addition, it seems that the school is capable of so much but in recent years senior
projects have not been as impactful or big as they can be, and we want to break
away from this trend. What we will learn while doing this project can not be
matched in a traditional classroom setting.

How?
Nebyu and I plan on first designing the shed on paper and AutoCad or Revit. We
have two designs in mind and once the plans are drafted we want to get the
administration, Marlowe, and Leberger to ultimately approve/choose one of the
designs. From there we plan on working at a constant and consistent rate to get the
shed built by the end of first semester or third quarter. We will be building the shed
ourselves with the help of Marlowe and his engineering friend if need be. This may
seem hard, but we will put the research in and watch videos and learn how to do it
correctly and we can always outreach to real engineers if we get stuck. In addition
to this Nebyu has worked with Leberger and UNLV to frame a life size wall and the
shed is essentially 4 of them. We plan on using the wood shop tools in the
engineering room to make all the cuts and sanding we need.

Funding is clearly a factor in a project of this size and we have accounted for this
too. Since the final design hasn't been picked yet it's hard to estimate the cost of
the shed. What we do know is that for one of out proposed locations we would have
to lay concrete and then build a shed and we roughly estimate based on national
averages that this could cost about $4000. The second location already has
concrete laid so based on national averages we assume it would cost about $2000.
We have found three potential grants (linked at bottom) that could earn us about
$10000 combined and are hoping that with Ms. Semmlers help we could apply to
these grants and more.

Where?
We are planning on building the shed directly outside of the F building woodshop
which is where Mr. Marlowe has started his new raised bed and cold front project.
We feel that this location is the best because it is the closest to where all the work is
being done, and thus it will make it very efficient for students to have tools and
materials available right by their side.

3
When?
The plan is to have the project and our schedules authorized this year, so that we
can have Ms. Semmler start filling out the grants this year and the money can be
ready by the start of next year. Over the summer Dhruv and I will work on getting
the sketches and computer drafts done for both proposed layouts and locations.
Come the start of next year, we will present the drawings and cost analysis of these
proposed layouts and administration can pick the one that they like the best based
on grant money and etc. After a design is picked, the materials can be bought and
on a daily basis Dhruv and I will work on the project and attempt to have it
complete by the start of second semester or some time third quarter if need be.

Time Frame Overview

May - June 2017
Get the project idea approved by administration
June 2017 - August 2017
Dhruv and I will work to get complete sketches, computer
drafts, and renders of the shed.

4
August 2017 - September 2017
Dhruv, administration, and I will sit down and discuss
based on grant funds available/earned if the project can be started
We will then work on getting all the necessary wood and
materials purchased
September 2017 - November/December 2017
Dhruv and I will work diligently every day we have our
capstone class to get the shed built
Completion Date - End of School Year
We will make a presentation about the project and the
school can show it off to students and parents if they want.
