Coriant Pluggable Optical Layer BENEFITS OF THE CORIANT

PLUGGABLE OPTICAL LAYER
Disaggregating the Optical Layer with Offers a cost-effective,
Compact Pluggables customizable, and scalable
pluggable solution for metro,
metro edge, and access networks
CUSTOMIZING WITHOUT COMPROMISING: with 30% or more CapEx
MERGING LOW COST AND MODULAR FLEXIBILITY savings compared to traditional
approaches
Network operators have been forced to compromise on either the low upfront cost
of integrated system functionality in a small form factor or the flexibility of a modular Provides up to 70% savings
DWDM system design. Coriant has responded to this challenge by revolutionizing in space and power efficiency
optical networking solutions with the innovative Coriant Pluggable Optical Layer. The with customized functionality for
specific applications
Pluggable Optical Layer is the first solution in the industry to provide comprehensive
optical layer functionality on discrete, standardized pluggable components (such Enables future-proof scalability by
as SFPs and XFPs) rather than proprietary full-size interface modules. Capabilities incrementally adding functionalities
with pluggable components
integrated onto these pluggable components include Electronic Variable Optical
Attenuators (EVOA), fixed and variable gain amplifiers (EDFA), Optical Supervisory Ensures simplified deployment
Channel (OSC), Optical Channel Monitor (OCM), Optical Time Domain Reflectometer and operations with plug-and-play
(OTDR), and Wavelength Selective Switching (WSS). The result is a solution that active and passive modules
provides up to 70% savings in price, power, and space by enabling network operators Leverages the full set of
to choose only the functionality needed for specific applications. Additionally, the functionalities required for FOADM
inherent operational simplicity of pluggable solutions enables network operators and ROADM solutions to empower
configuration flexibility
to easily expand the capabilities of their optical network by simply adding more
pluggable components.

The Pluggable Optical Layer consists of the pluggable form factors SFP, XFP, OFP1,
and OFP2. SFPs and XFPs are recognized industry standard form factors while
the OFP1 and OFP2 are newly defined pluggable form factors optimized for more
sophisticated optical functionality. OFP2s are based largely on CFP2s in size and
form, however, they are size and cost optimized for optical layer functions. OFP1s
are larger pluggable components and support the most advanced optical layer
functionalities such as wavelength selective switches.

LEVERAGING THE SAME OPTICAL COMPONENTS

ACROSS THE CORIANT PORTFOLIO
A truly standardized and disaggregated solution, the Pluggable Optical Layer
provides a wide variety of combinations with virtually any set of products. As shown
in Figure 1, the Pluggable Optical Layer components can be added to any product
with the addition of a simple host card, referred to as an Optical Carrier Card (OCC),
enabling the same set of optical components to be leveraged across the entire
Coriant portfolio. For example, applicable elements of the Pluggable Optical Layer are
integrated into the Coriant 8600 Smart Router Series such as IP-Optical transport
that combines highly flexible IP/MPLS and cost-efficient high-capacity optical transport
on one network element.
