Final Data Analysis

After reading four sources I feel more enlightened about music and how much of an
impact, it has on physical performance and a psychological aspect. Music for a training playlist
should be chosen with the following criteria: fast tempo(for aerobic), slow tempo(for anaerobic),
positive connotation, individual preference, considerately loud volume. Volume should be too
loud because that is supposedly the most dangerous part about multitasking and listening to
music especially in a busy public setting where an awareness of surrounding is needed. At first I
thought, personal music could be used to enhance the performance of an athlete during an
event however I forgot to consider the communication aspect. So unfortunately, listening to
music via headphones is not an option. However, generally music is played through a speaker
for the audience's entertainment. I believe that music should be more focused to help the
athletes as well as appeal to the audience. The first article about explore motivational qualities
through listening to music. Choose three songs; The first piece, Out of Space by The Prodigy,
was rated as oudeterous 10 (Motivational Quotient = 16.95). The second piece, Back In My Life
by Alice Deejay, was rated 11 as moderately motivational (Motivational Quotient = 22.15). The
third piece, Set You Free by N- 12 Trance, was considered to be highly motivational
(Motivational Quotient = 26.18). Karageorghis found out factors that affect the performance
were: rhythm, style, melody, tempo, instruments, and beat (Karageorghis). Another study by
Karageorghis measured the ratings of perceived exertion(RPE). Each track had the condition of
having at least one chorus and one verse and were in the genre of rock or pop. Many positive
feeling were affiliated with listening to music so the perceived exertion decreased from listen to
music (Psychophysical and Ergogenic Effects of Synchronous Music During Treadmill Walking).
Music in Sport Exercise summarizes all his finding about how listening to music narrowed the
mind from thinking the athlete is exhausted and these study followed after the the controversy of
how music was banned from New York Marathon due to failure in communication between
coaches and the athlete (Music in Sport and Exercise : An Update on Research and
Application). Another study by Yamashita spoke the reduction of stress on the autonomic
nervous system. Eight subjects took a baseline test to test their RPE following another test.
Generally the subject experienced significant peak of RPE following a drop. While listen th
music the the peak and drop were comparatively mild.
