At Home Instructions
Lucy might be feeling poorly for a few days or even a few weeks until the
medications can take effect.
Provide Lucy with a quiet, stress-free place for her to rest.
Provide her with plenty of fresh, cool water, as her medications will make
her very thirsty.
Make sure to let her out for potty breaks every 2 to 3 hours, and keep her
somewhere where accidents can be cleaned up easily. Her medication may also
cause diarrhea.
Do not let her overexert herself. Avoid making her climb stairs!
Watch her eating habits carefully. If she doesnt eat, call us, because she probably
isnt feeling well.
Keep Lucy away from other animals that could spread disease and infection as her
immune system will be weakened.
To prevent a recurrence, avoid anything that will stimulate the immune system:
o Stinging insects and other environmental allergens/toxins
o Prevent inflammation or infection such as periodontal disease
o Do not give apply any flea or heartworm prevention or vaccinations while
Lucy is sick.
Medications:
o Prednisonegive 1 tablet twice a day (every 12 hours) by mouth
o Famotidinegive tablet twice a day (every 12 hours) by mouth
o Azathioprine (Imuran)give tablet once a day (every 24 hours) by mouth
Recheck Appointment
o We will want to see Lucy in a few days to
check her CBC and PCV levels. We will
have to check them twice a week until
they are normal.
o Once normal, they can be checked every
2 to 3 weeks
o Medications and treatments will fluctuate
depending on blood work results.
o After stabilization, a basic blood panel should be performed every 4 to 6 months.
o The goal is to reduce to Prednisone to once a day after Lucy has been stable for
about 2 weeks.
o Hopefully in 2-4 months we will be able to stop giving Prednisone while
maintaining Lucy on Azathioprine, given every other day.
o If Lucy doesnt respond to the medication, we may need to consider a
splenectomy.
Please call us if any of these signs appear:
o Weakness and lethargy o Seizures
o Difficulty or rapid breathing o Black/tarry stool
o Dark colored urine o Fever
o Pale gums o Vomiting
o Lack of eating o Diarrhea
o Yellowing of mouth/eyes o Itching/Redness
