Dance Analysis
Intro to Jazz
The Examples of: Forces

I had the opportunity to attend the performance at salt Lake Community College south

city grand theatre, that was held on April 15th 2016 It was called Forces, and was presented by

the Salt Lake Community College Dance Company. The director of the concert was Tess Boone

and the featured guest and choreographers were Rosie Banchero, Tess Boone, Solange Gomez,

Cortney Haymond and Elizabeth Stich. I was amazed at all the dancers and the hard work put in

throughout leading up to the performance. Being in the audience you could see the dedication

and the result of their hard work, not just by watching the dance but feeling apart of their dances

as they were being performed. The Movement and expression through dance presented here

helped me relate and relieve the stresses of everyday life. there movements expressed how I feel

through the way of dance, a form of communication that I can't effectively show but they were

my voice on the stage.

There were many Exciting and expressive performances one dance that I observed was

the called the Bird Machine. In this dance the costumes of the dancers were more of a "street

apparel" look, they wore plaid shirts tied around there waist and black was the bottoms of their

costumes. The music picked for this dance was upbeat and the bass was noticeable, This is

important because it went hand in hand with the popping movement and feel that was involved in

this dance. There was a beat to the body of the dancers all had the rhythm of the music and were

one with the music. At times there dancing would break off beat but then would once again align

with the music. The style of the music was also important it gave you the feeling of the Street

dancing and feel when you think of hip-hop. The dancer during the dance would be in sync with
each other and then break away some with the pumping of their fist with the piles in open

second position and including bending in the second position until there bottoms were touching

their heels. Bird machine was high energy with a simple motion but crisp and clean moves with

each of the dancers. Being in the audience you could feel the intensity but smoothness of the

overall flow. One particular part of the dance included isolations with the top of the body and

head moving off center and in opposite directions. Other actions involved were locking of the

body to give you that flexing and releasing of a muscle. Different parts of the body could be seen

as having some form of a "break" of the body another way to describe the isolation but the great

big movements with their arms and legs swaying to the beat of the music with a sort of two step

with the feet.

The meaning and feeling I got from the bird machine was confidence and exactness. just

the movement and the beat was rigid but exciting. The art to the pop and the locking all had

meaning of swagger and the motion of dominance. In the dance the sequence of the dancers

being in sync with one another gave you a feeling of team work and having a sense of backup.

showing the confidence and what you got. The high energy in the bending of the knees and

isolations made during this performance made it intense and fascinating.

Last days of summer was another dance that was preformed, In it there were both male

and females, the movements between them were different but interlock with one another. One

important not to this dance is that it gives a sense of an innocent day with your friends. This

particular movement had a story to it. The style of dress was a old town country feel. The

Woman were wearing light colored dresses that were gentle and the guys were wearing what you

would see in a older movie such as suspenders and a button up shirt with a hat. The props that

were used was a dock and the music related to the prop. The music was of great importance in
that it was somewhat the theme of the dance. another big part was the lighting, in this dance it

was a lot softer and overall able to recognize and imagine that there dancing at a bay on the dock.

In the performance the men and women weren't all out on stage once, some of them

would come in with the motion of water like construction of movement meshed with jete `s and

open movement with their arms. there movement matched a simple but creative way to a day

hanging out in the sun with their arms swinging back and forth to the song. The dance women

and men dance together and then separate there are parts of them sitting at the dock swaying and

have musicality. The movement isn't intense but simple and sweet with the feet movement it can

relate to ballet and a mix of jazz in that there are many of same movements plies, turns and open

body movements of the arms widespread and big.

My interpretation of Last days of summer included the simple but descriptive movements

when they were all sitting at the dock swaying one with another matching one another's tone of

softness and low intensity. it was gorgeous to see the flow of the women and the men as they

came together and then separated. Another interpretation made was how at the end and the

beginning it started off as two people and as the dance went on more people came on to the stage

and then at the end was left again back to two people giving the imaginative thoughts that go

through one's mind on a sunny day of summer sitting at the docks.

In conclusion the interpretation of both dances are unique and can contrast one another in

that the difference of intensity and music and costumes can make each dance diverse and

intriguing! the overall experience was fascinating from beginning to end. all of the movements

shown and danced were movements similar in our intro to jazz class that we have experienced.

With the basics of jazz you realize the connection that it has between all forms of dances. A lot of
what I was able to understand form the dance i learned in class and was a better tool to use to

analyze the gorgeous form of dance.
