Danube Delta

Delta is the largest reserve of wet lands in Europe covering an area of 2.681km. In
1990, UNESCO included the Danube Delta, the newest form of relief from Romania, away
from the "industrialization process", in biosphere reserves.
Danube Deltas geography
Danube Delta is limited to the southwest of the Podisul Dobrogei, in the north Danube Delta
forms the border with Ukraine, and in east flows into the Black Sea. Danube Delta is the cross
of latitude 45o N parallel and meridian longitude 29o E. Delta deal with complex Razim-
Sinoe 5.050 km2, from which 732 km2 are in Ukraine, assuming the Romanian Danube Delta
an area of 2540 km2. Due to the 67 million tons of silt brought by the Danube, Danube Delta
grows to about 40 m2.

Danube Deltas geology

Danube Delta is located,in geological terms, in a mobile land cover region called the Danube
Deltas Platform. The Platform of Danube Delta comes in contact in the south-west by the
North Dobrogea Orogen by Oancea fault-St. Gheorghe, who is almost parallel to the arm
Saint Gheorghe.
Its geological structure consists of crystalline foundation over which has a transgressive
sedimentary blanket represented by a sequence of Paleozoic deposits, Triassic, Jurassic,
Cretaceous and Quaternary, caused by large and shallow drilling conducted in the area.
Deposits of Paleozoic age, belonging ofSilurian-Permian floors (438-230 million years), are
composed of limestone, dolomite, silt, lithic sandstones..
Deposits of Triassic age (248-213 million years) are made at the base of ferruginous silt, clay,
sandstone, with intercalations of Porfi feldspar, and transgressive appear, sandstones,
limestones, silts, marl which contain species of plants.
Deposits of Jurassic age (Dogger-Malm ages - 176-142 million years) are composed mainly
of limestone (at base), clay limestones, sandstone and gray and yellowish limestones (on top),
with fossils of foraminifera. Cretaceous age deposits of Aptian-Senonian(121-65 million
years) are composed mainly of clay and silt ferruginous, with intercalations of fine
sandstones.
Neogen age deposits (Sarmatian-Romanian floors - from 13.5 to 1.8 million years) are
composed of a succession of layers with sand, silt and clay, with Mactra sp.
Quaternary age deposits (deltaic deposits belonging Pleistocene-Holocene floors - 1.8 to 0.01
million years) are made at the base from a red-brick clay layer followed by a succession of
layers of gravel, sand , silt, clay and loess layers and to have the upper fluvial sediments of
origin and river-lake. (Mutihac V., 1990, Ionesi L, 1994)
Danube Deltas geomorphology
According to FAO classification (SOTER - Procedure Manual, 1993), Delta is
included in the category of regional relief type on plain wet river alluvial deposits with
a high degree of fragmentation.
Delta is characterized by positive landforms called banks and negative landforms
represented by depressions filled with water (lakes). Currently, Delta is in the form of
flat surfaces with a slope of 0.006 , crossed by a web of water: river arms,
channels and streams, and lakes dotted. Differences in altitude above sea level, are
8-10 m in the sand banks and -2 - (-4) m in the lake depressions.
Delta territory is divided into two geographical sub-regions, namely: Delta itself
covering an area of 4250 km2, located between the river arms and Razim complex
area, with an area of 990 km2. In terms of physical-geographical Delta is divided
across the river into two arms natural subregions: River delta and delta sea.
River Delta cover over 65% of the total area of the delta. This subregion of the
Danube Delta is divided into more natural units such as Sireasa Depression,
Depression Sontea-Storm, Pardina Depression, Depression-Merhei Matita, beams
Chilia, beams Stipoc, Ostrovul Tataru, Ostrovul Babina, Ostrovul Cernovca
Depression Litcov, Erenciuc Depression, Depression-Buhaiova Rosca, Meadow
Tulcea-Murighiol and Dranov-Dunavat Depresion..
Delta sea occupies less than 35% of the Danube Delta. In this subregion, as if the
river delta, meet positive and negative relief areas but, unlike the first subregion, the
bottom of the depression is below sea level in most cases.

Chilia is the northern arm of the Danube Delta and has a length of 11km. For a
century and a half, Chilia is forming a secondary delta, whose arms are scattered in the
Ukrainian town Valcov. With alluvial, this secondary delta forward quickly in the sea because
from Chilia arm flows 60% of the flow of the Danube, being navigable for barges and small
maritime vessels.
As part of the Romanian Danube Delta, the secondary Delta of Chilia arm forms a natural
reserve, located in Valcov. Today Chilia arm forms the Romanian-Ukrainian border directly
on a portion of 85.8 km. On some sections, the Ukrainian-Romanian border passes to south
of the main branches, trace the following side arms: Tatomir arm (13.6 miles), Old
Stamboul (15.3 km) and Musura (9.5 miles), so that the Romanian ships can not move freely
from the sea in the Delta or vice versa through the mouth of this arm

Sulina is the shortest and straightest arm of the Danube Delta, formed by dividing Tulcea
arm, east of Tulcea in two arms: arm Sulina in N and St. Gheorghe in S. It flows into the
Black Sea near the city Sulina . It has a length of 71 km. It is regulated and channeled,
allowing navigation of maritime ships with a draft up to 7 m.

St. Gheorghe is southern arm arm of the Danube, to its flowing into the Black Sea,
in St. George-town perimtrul Delta. Of the three arms of the Danube, is the southern arm of
the Danube and the oldest, facing southeast, has a sinuous course conducted over 112 km and
carries 22% of river flow.
Birds
Deltas ornithofauna totals more than 300 species of which 70 non-European. Are
recorded five main types: Mediterranean (herons, glossy ibis, cormorant, bald eagle, stilt,
ciocintors, Califar, Pelican), European (songbirds: nightingale reed bunting, sea swallows,
gulls, osprey, eagle tailed), Siberian (swan, piper, popular diver, snipe common crane),
Mongolian (bald eagle, falcon Danube), China (egret, swan, great cormorant, mandarin rate).
Birds - nature monuments. The chapter includes white monuments (common and
curly pelican, spoonbill, egret or heron great white egret small swan, swan) and polychrome
monuments (stilt, red Califar, tailed eagle).
Spoonbill has white plumage with shades of orange yellow on the chest and
head.On the neck has a bow made of feathers longer, which rises when irate fan-
shaped. It is a large bird reaching a height of 80 cm. Black legs are long, long beak
which is widened at the top, the youth is yellow and at adults is black, only the top of
the beak remains yellow.
Spoonbill nests in areas of marsh, wet meadows or on rocky islands. The nest is
hidden in the reeds, but can be placed in trees or on cliffs in colonies near the
seagulls that steal eggs or young spoonbill.
Their food consists of fish, amphibians, crustaceans mollusks worms, insect larvae.
The food is purchased by bank filtration beak. Migratory birds are being spread on a
wide geographical area in Southern Eurasia, from Spain to Japan and North Africa.
Seagulls are aquatic birds that live on the sea coast, it being part of the family
Laridae, order Charadriiformes. Laridae family comprises 6 genera with 55 species.
Seagulls are about between the size of a pigeon and an eagle (30-80 cm). Birds
have wings slender and sharp, and the top has a rounded and powerful beak. The
three fingers have a interdigital toe that enables water movement. Seagulls are
colored white gray plumage, some species with black spots or stripes on head and
back. The seagulls stressed there is no sexual dimorphism, but males are slightly
larger. Gull chicks are frequently dotted with black and gray color, becoming adult
birds to four years after hatching.
Mandarin duck is one of the most outstanding waterfowl, and is very appreciated
and common, is known as the "rainbow Far East." In the wild, living in China
Mandarin rate, Korea, Japan and Eastern Siberia, the species being introduced in
England, where he adapted quite well.
Mandarin is a small bird rate, which weighs only 500 grams and is about the size of a
pigeon pigeons. The male is very colorful, quite different from other species.
Mandarin ducks head is a bright greenish-black, which gets a touch of violin at the
back of the head crest. The sides of the head are white with little brown in his eyes.
Upper chest is brown, and the lower abdomen and sharp claws are albe. Are that
allow them to climb trees and build nests there. A unique feature is the wing tips, a
bright orange.
Hawks have curved upper beak down, helping to tear meat bird or game animal to
break the skull. Iris birds of this family is generally dark in color. Upper legs are
covered with feathers, like the other birds and predators. All hawks have 15 cervical
vertebrae, allowing for example the "Falco tinnunculus" head to rotate 180 degrees in
search of prey. Hawk Eye sight allows a bird to rotate 220 without head.

Crane is a migratory bird with sharp beak, the neck and long legs with gray feathers
and a red spot on his head.
Two species live in Romania, "Crane big" which nestles in the Danube Delta and
"small crane" which reaches 96 inches tall and is rarely seen because it is only in the
past, nestled in Central Asia and the Nile Delta iernand.

Stilt is 38 cm, was admitted immediately after very long legs, dark red or pink.
General color is white and only wings in flight, to see black. The beak is long, black,
straight and thin. Delta is the guest of summer, where it nests in small colonies,
established in salty.
Common snipe is a migratory bird can meet during the summer wet areas of
meadows, tundra, etc.., From Russia to Iceland.
Migration occurs to Africa and South Asia.
Adults are 23-28 cm, 39-45 cm with a scale of. The body is spotted brown above and
paler on the abdomen. They have a dark stripe over the eye, striped crown.
They feed on the ground in marshes with worms, earthworms, various insects.
When "make love", the male flies in circles and then leave empty to removing a
specific sound.
It is very shy bird stand very well camouflaged in specific wetland vegetation. It has a
specific flight, zigzag to fool potential predators.

It is also called great white heron and. It is the rarest heron in Romanian fauna and
was declared a natural monument. Ciconiiformelor order is part of the family
Ardeidae (herons). It has 90 inches long, are found in Europe, Africa, Asia and
Australia. In Romania, the bird is guest of summer, being found more in the Delta.

In our more numerous in the Delta. Size is quite small, smaller than the blue tit. It is
recognized as the black spot on the sides of the head. The male has a chestnut
brown back hard, brown-yellow female in May, has no black spot on the cheeks,
head uniform with yellow-red color. Similar behavior of tits. Very thin voice, long: "tiiii"
FASE cry about the red, but with a slightly pitched downward at the end, as thin
macaleandrului speechless. Song silent short, a fine and pleasant chirping.

Swans are a large group of seabirds belonging anatidae family. Can be recognized
by curved neck and white plumage after.
Swans feed on plants, algae, grass roots, but sometimes eat small aquatic creatures.
Most birds have no teeth, but swans have serrated beak, with small sharp corner,
which come with food.

About 150 species are known from more than 30 in the actual Delta. The arms of the
Danube, are common present sterlet, large oblate, cod, sturgeon, sevruga, mackerel, carp,
catfish, perch, pike, barbel, rapacious carp, carp prefer calmer waters, perch, bream, brackish
environment is populated by perch and pike in the mullet and flounder depending on water
salinity, marine sector shelters mostly acipenseridele (beluga, sturgeon) and clupeidele
(Danube mackerel).

Pike lives mainly in stagnant waters rich in vegetation, but also in the running to hilly
area.
Does the body is relatively thick, cylindrical and elongated, with, usually, normal
length of 30-40 cm (exceptionally 1.5 m) and weighing 0500 g - 1 kg (exceptionally 6
to 25 kg).

longer than the above. Dorsal fin located far to the tail.
Coloration varies by water, the gray - green to yellow - green back, white belly, sides
striped, mottled. Fins with several black transverse stripes - gray.

Bream has a laterally flattened body with a length between 30-50 cm, in exceptional
cases may reach a length of 85 cm and a weight of 7 kg. Report the largest eyes are
relatively small. Fish can easily recognize a greenish-gray scales back plumburie. On
the side is a lighter color with pearl-metallic flashes. The older specimens are shades
of tan. Scales are covered by abundant mucus. Fins are relatively long dark brown

which was often confused. The spawning fish while the other crossings occur through
so-called "bastards". Optimal life payout can reach age 16.
Short nose sturgeon is rounded and wide; whiskers are placed near the muzzle.

In the Black Sea, so in our waters is widespread sp. Ac. Guldenstaedti colchicus.
Adults living in high, and faseolinoid mitiloid facies (from 60-70 m depth), petting
turbot and sea fox.
As anadromous fish migration, spring (April-May) climb up the Danube, for
reproduction, to the Iron Gates, depositing eggs in all the river, in places shallow,
rocky and sandy bottom (May-June) to autumn, mostly of young adults and return to
the sea where the depth wintering in small groups.
It feeds on molluscs, crustaceans and small fish.
He lives about 45 years and more.
Perch is the name given to species of the genus Perca, gregarious group of
predatory freshwater fish, native spread in Europe (except Spain, Italy, Greece) and
Asia. It was introduced in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
It is a silvery-green fish with red fins and ventral fins with two dorsal, with spikes.
Maximum length is over 51 cm known. On average, weighing 200-500 g perch,
although the maximum value of 4.750 kg is known. Life can reach up to 22 years.
Mackerel is a pelagic fish that lives in the sea near the shores bancuriin. Pisces
have a length between 30-50 cm and can reach age 11. Mackerel feed on plankton
and other fish as juvenile herring, or clupeidae Gadidae.
Sturgeon are an order of large marine predatory fish with cartilaginous skeleton-
bone, the body without scales, covered with five longitudinal rows of bony discs,
fishing for meat, caviar and their glue.

Mammalian diversity and number of the Delta are generally provided in areas
isolated wetlands. Identified 44 species of mammals, of which the most numerous examples
are those of rodents and insectivorelor. These small mammals, most mammals are food for
carnivores and birds of prey. The number and variety of areas are ensured high water generally
avoided. Otter, mink, muskrat (precious furs), rabbit, wild boar, fox, wolf, polecat, wildcat.
Sands shelter tortoises, vipers, snakes colonies.
Deer is a mammal that belongs to the family Cervidae ruminant.
Height is 65-75 cm in greban and body length may vary between 95 and 135 cm.
In some species, sexual dimorphism is very pronounced: male, Capreolus capreolus
L, called roe, is larger than females and have antlers, weighing between 20 and 30
kg. Deer is hunted for its fur brown red or red-brick, became gray in winter.
Badger is one of the most amazing animals in the fauna of Romania. Badger is an
omnivorous animal, the industrious fruit, seeds, larvae, gastropods, eggs etc..
It is a great lover of corn, which he lumps the hole in amounts of up to 50 pounds of cob.
Generally makes supplies fall, although winter is generally very low activity and fat gain that
assures fall in milder winters survival even without reserves of the earth.
Martes Foin is a kind of family Mustelidae carnivores including eight species widespread in
Europe, Asia and the Americas. Such animals are considered "true martens."
Are small animals with a body lithe slim body length between 40 and 65 cm with a bushy tail
that has a length between 12 and 40 cm. Animal weight varies between 0.8 and 5.5 kg. Coat
color is different shades of brown spots or stripes sometimes. They are animals live mostly in
the forest. Their food consists of small mammals, birds and their eggs, also some fruits and
forest plants.
Wolf, though not far from the largest or most powerful of European carnivores, has imposed
since ancient times. He was received as a symbol of ancient Dacians and other peoples, even
the Romans having as a sign of their beginnings.
Animal is a robust and flexible length of up to approx. 1.5 m, plus a tail up to about 0.8 m.
The weight is variable, usually between 30 and 50 kg, but in some cases exceeding 70 kg.
The coat is a brown-gray with multiple variations. It consists actually of two rows of hairs:
very often, woolly, near the skin, yellowish-gray and a second, longer, called the ear, with
black tip. Shedding generally fall in temperate areas, the wolf has a "coat" of summer, darker,
and one winter, lighter.

Fox, carnivorous mammal is systematically framed family Canidae, with the wolf, dog,
jackal, raccoon, etc..
Although usually considered to be reddish fox is actually color or have a wide variety (from
bright red to yellow-gray). Speaking, therefore, the existence of three varieties of fox: Birch
(chest, and the ventral tip of the tail white, and yellow sides), cross (which has a black stripe
on the back, which crosses the on the front, the most prevalent) and carbunareasa (chest, neck,
belly and tail tip black, gray or dark gray and legs). There are also intermediate varieties, in
many cases very difficult to distinguish certain varieties of fox dogs.
Wild cat, mat called wild, wild or tomcat Martani wild cat is a small, native of Europe,
western part of Asia and Africa. The species is carnivorous and feeds on small
mammals, birds and other animals of similar size.
She prefers quiet forests, as large, with many old trees and / or thickets.
Beavers are mammals of medium length, with a body length of 90 cm. Beaver Weight varies
depending on the species from 10 kg to 30 kg. They have a silky coat, reddish brown color.
Beavers have an elongated body, with small and powerful States. Their tail is high and wide
uncovered.
In the middle of winter, young beavers looking for a partner to reproduce, which remained in
most cases by the end of life. Beavers breed in late winter in February and the gestation
period lasts about 100 zile.De female usually gives birth to 5-8 cubs. Puppies are born with
fur, eyes open and with incisor teeth develop. Chicks remain with adults until maturity.
Beavers can be found near rivers and water basins medium and large, in Europe, North
America and some parts of South America.
Hare has a body length varies between 60 cm and 70 cm, weight between 4 - 4.5 kg. Well
camouflaged, the color is almost always confused with the environment. The back is brown-
yellow, spotted with black. Yellow-rust sides more. The abdomen is whitish. The neck is
yellow-brown with white inserts. Tail above, dark gray with black spot appearance, white
underside.

to autumn, born 3-5 generations.
It feeds exclusively on plants, grasses, stems, leaves, buds, bark of trees or young trees.
Pigs is a wild animal, omnivorous mammal and generally nocturnal. His area includes
spreading throughout Europe, North Africa including Atlas Mountains, much of Asia,
stretching south to Indonesia.
In Romania inhabits forests, from the Danube Delta and Meadow, by thickets Carpathians. Is
colored black - brown. Sounds very similar to those of domestic pigs. Wander in flock forests
and agricultural crops from their edge. Produce damage mainly in cornfields and potato. Sow
from piglets 4-6. It is hunted for meat and trophy. Can attack the man, so meeting with these
animals should be avoided.
European mink is an animal that lives in the family Mustelidae some regions of Spain,
France, Romania, Ukraine, Estonia and Russia. In the past lived in regions across Europe. It is
similar in appearance to the American mink.

Deltas Vegetation is mainly represented by a specific vegetation wetlands (reed,

bulrush, sedge, mixed with dwarf willow) and occupies 78% of the total area. Meadows
occupy 6% of the Delta, the forests of willow, ash, alder, poplar, which grow on river levees
and is periodically flooded and pools of water covered by floating aquatic vegetation and,
occupying 2% of the Delta. There are also fields Letea and Caraorman forest and are made of
greyish oak, oak, ash, aspen, elm, climbing plants.Delta has various aspects vegetation
occupying different environments: rivers, standing waters (lakes, wetlands), wetland, sand
banks, dunes, beaches. It is estimated that the Danube Delta flora comprises about 1150
species of plants. By some places the vegetation is so rich, that appear like mesh water
mirrors shining from vast flat meadows scattered among the reed or willow. In other places,
the banks, there are forests, pastures, meadows and even agricultural land. The main feature is
the dominance of the natural vegetation of aquatic plants.Delta waters submerged flora grow
rich (plankton - microscopic floating plants consisting of water and algae), floating and
amphibious, which usually meet in the water ponds. Along streams and channels of guard
columns of willow. A specific phytocenosis Delta is reed, which cover large areas to the
horizon, stopping a green wall around the lakes, the japselor, the edges of brooks and
channels. In shallow waters, reed rhizome is found in mud at the bottom. In waters deeper
massive form floating reed islet reed, a reed floating blanket, which is formed by the
interweaving rhizomes, roots, linked with humus and silt brought by the Danube and
deposited here. Plaur a band we meet no less than 20 plants, closely linked together and
placed in a certain order, the water's edge: ARROWHEAD, water fern, water watercress, rush,
rush and mace; inside plaur: sedge, Jaleul, Joiana, water hemlock, drgaica, the button-the-
lake, the button used, pasaruici eyes, rachitanul, knotgrass, boglarii, galbasoara, melilot and
zaloaga.
Between arms Chilia and Sulina, there is Letea forest, a natural monument, declared
a biosphere nature reserve because of its special nature of the vegetation and beyond. Situated
in the north-east of the Danube Delta, on the beam with the same name, Letea forest is subject
to a regime of protection, considering the existence of rare plant species such as wild vine,
liana, plants of Mediterranean origin, giving tropical forest character. Liana reach the
northernmost limit here spreading in Europe.
It is the oldest nature reserve Romania, declared in 1938. Here you can find thousands of
plant species, many being unique in Europe or even worldwide. In the vast majority of exotic
plants have been built here seeds brought from Africa by migratory birds. A main feature of
the landscape is how strange the trees have grown in this forest. Their trunks are bent toward
the water, gnarled and twisted.
In the depressions between the dunes grow woody vegetation consisting mainly of oak
brumarii combined with alder, white and black poplars, elms, ash and lime.
Forest density increases because of the many species of trees that grow here: horn,
privet, hawthorn, soft chain, Sanger, verigariu, Calin, barberry. The originality of this forest
also contributes climbing plants and abundant exuberant character who print, send us think of
tropical forests: wild vine, tendril forest, ivy, hops and especially Liana - plant of
Mediterranean origin, the only area of Letea which meets Europe.
With beauty of the landscape and the variety of vegetation, the Danube Delta is a special
tourist area.
Danube Delta area is within the semiarid temperate climate specific Pontic
steppe. Flat water and very large areas covered with vegetation in varying degrees,
interrupted by islands of sandy marine fields, make up an area adjacent Delta
activities and lagoons, quite different from the Pontic steppe.
This active surface reacts to the total radiation received and the general circulation of
the atmosphere resulting in a mosaic of microclimates. Total radiation varies between
a minimum of 3.5 Kcal / cmp recorded in the winter months and a maximum of 17
Kcl. / CMP, in July. Depending on the intensity of activity centers main barometric
install specific weather conditions: mild winter days (when the center barrel northeast
Europe), cold winter days with strong winds (when acting anticiclonii North Atlantic),
summer day warm and dry (when acting anticiclonii tropical Pacific), rainy summer
days (when the Mediterranean air interacts with the cold north-west Europe).
Sunshine duration is high, the multiannual average is 2250 hours, but can reach
2600 hours in low nebulosity years. The temperature is uniformly distributed on the
surface of the delta. Multi-media show temperature increases from west to east. At
the tip of the Delta (Tulcea) medium annual temperature is 10.94 C, the river delta
(Gorgova) of 10.96 C, on the seashore (Sulina) of 11.05 C and into the Black Sea
(Platform Gloria) of 11.86 C.
Average daily amplitudes reflect major differences due to the nature of active surface:
the Gorgova varies between a maximum of 9 C (in July) and a minimum of 3.8 C (in
December), the Sulina between 2.8 C (July) and a , 4 C (in November) and Gloria
station between 2.3 C (in July) and one C (in December and February). Annual
amounts of the actual daily average temperatures approaching 1600 degrees C. The
air humidity recorded the highest values in Romania. Winter air relative humidity
ranges between 88-84% to 85% and 89 Gorgova at Sulina and Saint George, and in
summer, between 69-71% in Gorgova and 77-80% at Sulina and Saint George.
Precipitation is reduced in quantity and decrease from west to east due to its specific
active surface delta and the Black Sea. On entering the Danube Delta (Tulcea) are
registered an average yearly rainfall of 450 mm and the Sulina, 360 mm. In most of
the delta fall between 350 and 400 mm rain, and the deltaic coast and most of the
lagoons, below 350 mm.
The snow is thin and lasts for short periods only in harsher winters. Such situations
have occurred in the years 1928-1929, 1953-1954, 1941-1942, 1984-1985, when the
sea near the shore were frozen for 45-60 days. The dominant winds blow from the
northern sector alternative to the southern sector, the most intense wind acceleration
recorded in winter and transition seasons. Seasons are not uniformly distributed in
the Danube Delta. On entering the Delta, in Tulcea, averages 90 years reveals that
there are 142 days of summer? And 60 days of winter, springs and autumns are
almost equal length. At the same average annual Sulina show 145 days of summer
and only 15 days in winter, and springs are longer (122 days) than autumns (83
days).

Deltas population was always razleata, semi-aquatic environment not allowing

significant density (average density of five inhabitants per km2). Summer influx of tourists
triple the population that the census of 2002 is maintained at 14 583 inhabitants, of whom 12
666 Romanians (87%), 1438 Lipovan (10%), 299 Ukrainian various others (1%). Delta has
always been a refuge for populations medium original Greek, Romanian later, then Lipovan.
These populations were mixed, as illustrated by the vocabulary of the languages spoken in the
delta, especially fishermen.
