Foreword
This part of BS 4 has been prepared under the direction of the Iron and Steel
Standards Policy Committee and is a revision of BS 4-1:1980 which is withdrawn.
The major reason for this revision is to delete the requirements for tolerances on
beams, columns and bearing piles which are now contained in BS EN 10034,
published simultaneously with this standard. The opportunity has also been
taken to delete derived properties from the tables in the previous edition of this
standard.
The dimensions and masses of beams, columns and bearing piles have also been
amended slightly to correct anomalies in Table 5 to Table 7 of BS 4-1:1980.
Amendment No. 1 has been added to take into account UK requirements for
parallel flange channels.
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.
