WHY STUDY POKER
WITH SOFTWARE?
THINKING IN RANGES
Hand reading is the most important skill in poker. All strategies and tactics are in
some way based on your ability to read your opponents range of hands, analyze
the strength of their range compared to yours, and understand how these ranges
hit or miss a particular runout of community cards. This is exactly what poker
strategy software helps you do, in a variety of ways, at varying levels of complexity.
FLOPZILLA
Flopzilla is the most popular off-table study software for its simplicity and ease
of use. Plot ranges on the visual grid of all possible hole card combinations, input
a flop, and Flopzilla will show you how that range hits the board. This gives you a
good feel for how often players should or will be c-betting and/or continuing with
given ranges on given flop textures. HoldEQ is a popular add-on that allows you
to do some really in-depth range vs range exploration. Well give a brief introduc-
tion to using both programs in this guide, and link you up to additional resources.
PokerRanger and Combonator are popular alternatives with additional features.
FLOP FALCON
Flop Falcon presents information about flop equity and how two ranges hit or
miss any given flop. By controlling adjustable parameters like flop texture, range,
and what constitutes a hit and a miss, the program helps you develop an intu-
ition about making and reacting to continuation bets. Introduced in 2017, we give
a brief overview in this guide.
GTO SOLVERS
GTORangeBuilder, PioSolver, and HoldemResourcesCalculator provide dif-
ferent analysis of game theory optimal strategies for compared ranges and given
board runouts. They are advanced tools to gain insight and build intution in
common and unique situations and are recommended for those who are already
familiar with studying off-table with software.

used and custom-built ranges, saving you the time of drawing it in.
2. The range matrix let you to plot pre-flop hole card ranges, combo by combo,
with great flexibility. Set range by percentage form using the bottom bar. The
vertical bar is used to weight particular combos, for example, if they continue
with AKo 50% of the time, this can be fine-tuned in the range matrix.
3. The board matrix is where you specify flop, turn and river runouts. Leave it
blank to see how the range you defined his all possible flops.
4. The statistics area displays the equity of made hands and draws given the de-
fined range and the board runout. The equities of hands that have red check
marks are added together to give you an overall idea of how your defined
range hits a given board. Knowing this is key to calculating implied and
reverse implied odds.
5. Typically, the dead cards area is where you specify your own hole cards, elim-
inating them from the range matrix where your opponents range is input.
