chapter 1. understanding of tenses


Is a form of the verb tenses in English which changes depending on the timing and nature of
certain events in a sentence context. Indonesian does not have tenses (time change)as in
English. Good for yesterday, today and tomorrow, the verb form used in the Indonesian
language has never changed.

PRESENT TENSES
1.Simple present tense (kebiasaan/sederhana sekarang).
simple present tense is used to declare the act is being

done or one that becomes a daily habit characteristics among other details : every day, every
Sunday, every month, every year, every weak etc.
formula /rumus : I/ WE/ THEY + Verb

HE/ SHE/ It+ verbs + s

1. I go to school every day.
2. Does the sun in the west
3. They do not go to school every Friday.

2 . Present countinuous tense (waktu sedang berlangsung sekarang)


present continuous tense is

the tense used to express actions in progress or being worked on. characteristics
of information that is used for example : now, right now, to day, this morning.
Formula/ rumus : I/ We/ This/ he/ She/ it+ to be + Verb+ ving.

Example :
1. I am playing volley ball now.
2. Are you studying English right now ?
3. I not playing volley ball now.
4 Dewi is working on that task.
5 We are reading a newspaper now

3 Present perfect tense ( bentuk kalimat sempurna selesai sekarang )


present perfect is a form of sentence in the English language that states have done an
act arrives (in the past). the past can now, just now, was, yesterday, last week, last month, last
year and so on. Such time should use the present perfect present perfect sentences are
usually characterized by words such as: since 1995, there times, two times, and so forth.
Formula / rumus :

I / we / you / they + have + P2

4 Present perfect continuous tense ( sedang berlangsung sempurna selesai sekarang).


present

perfect continuous tense is used to declare events of the past and continues to this day and the
incident may have been made in the future such as indicated by the word all week, all
day, since, for teen years, and so forth.
Formula / rumus : I / we / you / they / + Have + been + verb + ing

He / she / it + has + been + verb + ing

PAST TENSE.
1. Simple past ( bentuk lampau sederhana )
simple past tense form of the time the claim is an act that occurred in the past (is simple)and there is
no connection at all characteristic of the marker in the present instance there is
a word: last week, yesterday, last years, ago, last Saturday and so on.

2. Past continuous ( sedang berlangsung lampau)


past continuous tense is the form used to express the ongoing events in the past.

Formula / rumus : I / he / she / it / + was + verb + ing

We / you / they + were + verb + ing

Example :
1.I was writing a lesson all day, yesterday.
2 Were they studying all day yesterday ?
3 We were not going to Jakarta week.
4 When I studied, He was entering the room.
5 They watched movie while Joana was working.

3,. Past perfect ( sempurna selesai lampau )
Past perfect tense is used to declare an event (action) in the past a perfect finish before
another deed done.ast perfect.

Formula / rumus : I / we / you / they / she / it + had + p2.

Example :
1. She had called the police before I came.
She hadn't called the police before I came.
had she called the police before I came?
2 I had finished my work.
I hadn't finished my work.
Had I finished my work?
3. You hadn't stopped before I did.
You had stopped before I did.
Had you stopped before I did?
4 She had gone to school.
She had not gone to school.
had she gone to school?
5. We had left.

4. Past perfect continuous ( sedang berlangsung selesai lampau )


past perfect continuous tense is used to express

a past event that took place before another event.


Formula / rumus : subject + had + been + verb + ing

FUTURE TENSE.
1 Simple future tense ( akan dating sederhana )
simple future tense is the form that states an act to

be done in future to characterize the marker example: there is a word tomorrow, next week,
next month, next year, next Saturday.
Formula / rumus : I / wee/ shaal/ will + verb

You / they / she / it + will + verb

Example :
1 I will go to Surabaya tomorrow.
2 Will go to Surabaya tomorrow ?

4. I will probably see Janet at the cafeteria at lunch.

2 Future continuous ( akan sedang berlangsung)


Future continuous

se a claim form is an act of will (are) held at a future time. Characteristic markers usually use
the word at five next week, at this time tomorrow, and so forth.

Formula / rumus : I / we / + shall / will + be + verb + ing


You / they / she / he / it + will + be + ing

Example :
1. My mother will be teaching math at five oclock next eek.
2. Shall you be studying French at this time next week ?
3. My mother will not be teaching math at five o clock.
4. We will not be using the car tomorrow.

3. Future perfect ( sempurna selesai akan datang )
Futu

re perfect tense is that which states that an act done in the past has been completed
at another time in the future. The characteristics of the marker there is
usually said by the time, by the end of, before, etc.
Formula / rumus : I / we + shall / will + have + p2.
You / they / he / she / it + will + have + P2

Example :
1. My sister will have read two novel of fredys writes by the of this week.
2. Will I have finished my exercise by the time ?
3. Mr. sucipto will not have met you before next month.
4. The Meeting will start at 09.00 a.m and will have finished at 11 a.m
5. The workers will have finished to build an apartment on February.

4. Future perfect continuous ( sedang berlangsung selesai akan datang )


future perfect continuous tense is that states act that has happened in the past and that
action might take place at different times in the future.

formula / rumus : I / we / shall/ will / + have + been + verb + ing

PAST FUTURE TENSE


1. Future past ( lampau akan datang )
future that is past tense is used to declare an act to be done in the past.

Formula / rumus : I / we / + Should / would + verb


You / they / they / she / it + would + verb

Example :
1. I would go to the London next Saturday.
2. Would I go to London next Saturday ?
3. The car would be bought by Mr. Andri when I met him yesterday.
4. You would be invited by Mrs. Jeany when I talked with her.

2. Future past continuous ( akan sedang berlangsung dimasa lampau )


future is

the past continuous tense to express action that will (being)implemented in the past.
Formula / rumus : I / we + should / would + be + verb + ing
You / they / he / she / it /+ would + be + verb + ing
Example :
1 I should be beginning an examination at this time following day.
2 We would be playing at six oclock yesterday morning.
3 Farmers in Jati Bali would be growing rice crops at 9 a.m. yesterday.
4 Transpiration would be starting to increase at 8 a.m. this morning.

3. Future past perfect ( pada masa lampau ( akan ) selesai sempurna )


future is the past perfect form that expresses a past action that will be
completed and when the conditions are met.

Formula / rumus : I / we + should / would + have + P2.


You / they / she / it + would + have + P2

Example :
1 I should have worked if I had graduate.
2 I should have graduate if I studied har.
3 He would have left if his parent came.
4 She never expected that she would have waited for her boyfriend for 2 hours last night.
5 I expected that I would have slept for 8 hours last night but I was awoken by my
neighbors long big fight at 1 a.m. It was very loud and I couldnt fall asleep till morning.

4 Future past perfect continuous ( akan sudah sedang berlangsung pada waktu lampau )
future past perfect continuous is rarely used even though the reported speech.
Formula / rumus : I / we + should / would + have been + verb + ing
You / they / she / it + would + have been + verb + ing

Example :
1 By last Christmas I should have been working in that office for five years.
2 Mr. Johnson had worked for twenty-nine years before he got fired last week
3 I had been living in that house for nine years before I moved to where I live now.
4 He had married her for 19 years when they finally had a baby last month.
