AR6213 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN - I

Almost every moment in our lives, awake or asleep, we are in buildings, around
buildings, in spaces defined by buildings. Architecture constantly touches us,
shapes our behavior and conditions our psychological mood.

Architecture is a shell of human species, it is the environment that we build for

ourselves and that, as we grow in experience and knowledge, we change it and
adapt to the expanded condition.

We shape buildings, they shape us

A space not only has to be functional, but it should evoke a memory to the person
who has been there. Architecture must be experienced by walking around and into
it. Architecture is the art into which we walk, the art that envelops us.

The reality of a room was to be found in the vacant space enclosed by the roof
and walls, not in the roof & walls themselves.

DESIGN BRIEF :

Your first impression of a home is probably the image you retain of the living area. In
fact, this is the only indoor area of the house that most guests observe. The living
area is where the family entertains, relaxes, dines, listens to music, watches
television, enjoys hobbies and participates in other recreational activities.

The living room is the formal center of the living area in most homes. Thus its
function, location, dcor, size and shape are extremely important and affect the
design and appearance of the entire residence. The popularity of formal living room
in closed plan is diminishing in the recent years.

A living room is a key room in the design because it can serve many purposes. It
depends on the living habits of the residents. A living room needs to be designed in
relation to the functions and activities. If many living area activities are to be
combined in one room, then a great room can be designed.

Rooms that combine the functions of a living room, dining room, family room and
sometimes the kitchen are called great rooms or sometimes gathering rooms.
Great rooms have gained popularity because of the multiple functions that can be
enjoyed at the same time. Conversations among people in different areas can occur
without interrupting separate activities.

Great rooms are not just large rooms. Great rooms are part of the open plan that
integrates elements of the living, dining and food preparation areas. The concept of
great room is that it includes these activities and how the functions are functional
without walls.
