Competing Visions of Human Rights

My research was focused on the present rights that we as humans have and examples of

ways they are being violated. Even though it has been stated many times that we have rights,

many people still lack them. Many programs have been put into effect and different events have

taken place to support and give us these rights. Even though we have rights, many people

continue to live without them and we continue to fight for the upholding of these rights and new

ones. Throughout this essay, I will be stating our rights and how they are not being abused.

Humans should at least get the basic rights of life, liberty, nationality, protection under

the law, and security (Universal). Everyone also deserves the freedom to marry and start a

family, equal pay for equal work, education, no holding in slavery, no torture or cruel treatment

(Universal). Countries and people that are wealthier tend to live in a cleaner place with safer

conditions(Meet), even if the rest of the people suffer. Its for reasons like this thousands of

children die in poor countries because they have to drink dirty water(Meet). Nearly 1 billion

people have to drink untreated sewage water and they end up dying(Meet).

There are many situations where large companies overlook simple human rights so they

can continue their business. Apple has had cases of having unsafe working conditions and

abusing their workers(Meet). Nestle has been accused of using slaves and children to produce

cocoa in the Ivory Coast(Meet). Samsung and Sony have been accused of child labor and unsafe

working conditions in factories(Apple). Shell has cases of supporting government brutality and

their frequent oil spills damage human health and ruin many jobs. These are just a few of the

many companies that abuse human rights.

There are many rights still being fought for like equal protection, fair trials, gender

equality, and discrimination. Many people are jailed for having opposing views without ever

having a fair trial (Meet). While minorities are in jail they are more prone to abuse (Meet). There

was even a situation where a guard watched a prisoner get beaten(Meet). Many females still

make less money than men even if they do the same job (Meet). Many women and children are

sold into human trafficking, forced labor and are being sexually exploited(Meet).

There will be continuous fighting for these rights and many others. These rights are being

taken from billions of innocent people all over the world, every single day. We see people being

stripped of their rights but still we do nothing but watch from a distance. This lack of helping

others just keeps the never ending cycle of rights being abused going. Many people are unaware

or do not want to help these people so this will be a very long process for the world to have to

handle.
