Exercise 2

Event Based Motion

The solution for this exercise is stored in the motion study Exercise 2-Solution of the assembly.
If you do not have time to complete all the steps feel free to take a peek at the solution.

Motion Toolbar

Steps
1. Close any previously opened model files
2. Open the model blockpusher-initial.SLDASM
3. From the Insert menu select New Motion Study
4. Select the study type to be Motion Analysis
5. Add gravity
a. Click on the Gravity button on the Motion Toolbar.
b. Select the direction to be along Y.
c. Use the default value for gravity.
d. Click OK
6. Add contact between the blocks and the belt.
a. Contact -> Solid Bodies -> Use Contact Groups -> Select the 3 boxes in Group1.
b. Click on the Group2 selection box. Select the belt.
c. Click OK
7. Add contact between the blocks and the tip and the collar.
a. Contact -> Solid Bodies -> Use Contact Groups -> Select the 3 boxes in Group1.
b. Click on the Group2 selection box. Select the tip and the collar.
c. Click OK
8. Add contact between the blocks and the bucket
a. Contact -> Solid Bodies -> Use Contact Groups -> Select the 3 boxes in Group1.
b. Click on the Group2 selection box. Select the bucket.
c. Click OK
9. Add contact among blocks
a. Contact -> Solid Bodies -> Select the 3 boxes in Group1. Note: Dont use contact
groups here
b. Click OK

10. Add a displacement servo motor on the wheel subassembly.
a. In the Motion Toolbar, click on Motor -> Rotary Motor
b. In the first selection box select the wheel surface.
c. Under Motion section, change the type of the motor to Servo Motor
d. In the next pull-down, select Displacement
e. Click OK
11. Proximity sensor: There is already a proximity sensor added to the model. Edit the sensor to
make sure that it is defined correctly.
a. In the main SolidWorks feature tree, right click on the Proximity1 sensor in the
Sensors folder and select Edit Sensor
b. Make sure that the sensor is defined at the center of the tip and the proximity
direction will detect the motion of the blocks.
c. Also make sure that the sensor will track the three blocks.
d. Make sure that the sensing distance is 10 in.
e. Click OK
12. Define initial velocity for the belt
a. In the Motion Tree, select the Belt part, RMB and select Initial Velocity
b. In the Initial Linear Velocity section in the PM, select the front surface of the belt
with normal along the +Z direction.
c. In the next edit box, specify the initial velocity to be 6 in/s
d. Click OK
13. Setup event based motion study
a. Click on the Event-based Motion View button on the right side of the Motion

Toolbar.
b. Add a task by clicking in the first row.
c. Define Trigger
i. Click the button in the Trigger column to define a trigger.
ii. Click on the + node next to Sensors in the pop-up.
iii. Select Proximity1 sensor and click OK.
iv. In the Condition column make sure that it says Alert On
v. No Time/Delay is required here. Leave that column unchanged.
d. Define Action
i. Define an action that needs to be performed once the sensor is triggered.
Click on the button in the Feature column in the Actions section.
ii. Click on the + node next to Motors in the pop-up
iii. Select the rotary motor you defined and click OK.
iv. In the Action column, click to open the pull-down and select Change
v. In the Value column, type in 360deg
vi. In the Duration column type in 0.35s
14. You are ready to run the motion study now.
a. Calculate the motion study by clicking on the Calculate button.
b. Play back the results using the play button next to the calculate button on the
Motion Toolbar
