Introduction
The HORNET mechanical set packer is a high-performance fullbore single string retrievable packer
with 41XX 18-22 Rc flow-wetted material. It is specifically designed to perform reliably in high pressure
frac and production applications. It is tension set or compression set and can be landed in compression,
tension, or a neutral condition.

Enhancements of field-proven design features

combining rugged simplicity, economy and ease of
operation, result in a new and test-proven standard
of performance. It now makes available reliable
performance in a retrievable packer under com-
bined conditions of 350F and 10,000 psi differen-
tial above or below the packer.

Solid upper slip cone for added strength and
elimination of release sleeve.

InQuest TUBEMOVE/Performance
Envelope Instructions
To use the performance envelope, the differen-
tial pressure and tubing forces, at the packer, must
be calculated using the InQuest TUBEMOVE
program. To run the InQuest TUBEMOVE program
for this packer, input the seal diameter as given in
the Specification Guide as the sealbore diameter
and input the tubing as being anchored into the
packer. With the pressure and force at the packer
calculated by InQuest TUBEMOVE, consult the at-
tached performance rating envelope to ensure that
the plotted coordinate (pressure, force) is inside
the envelope.
Important:
The rating envelope assumes that the casing is
supported.
Sometimes, the rating of the packer is higher
than the on-off tool. Consult the on-off tool
rating envelope to ensure that the rating is not
exceeded.
Sizing
The HORNET packers are sized with two-
three digit numbers. The first number denotes the
OD of the tool, and the second denotes the ID. For
example: a 450-193 is a 4.50" OD packer with a
minimum ID of 1.930".
Plugged Ratings
The plugged ratings are as follows:
NACE flow-wetted packer: 7,500 psi above
or below at 350F
Non-NACE packer: 7,500 psi above or
10,000 psi below at 350F
NOTE: HORNET packers were designed for
applications which consist of a plug in the seal nipple of
the on-off tool. When a plugging device is installed
below the Hornet packer, refer to the Hornet Packer
Plugged Ratings chart shown in this unit for pressure
ratings.

Running Procedures
NOTE: HORNET packers are shipped hand-tight and
are not pressure tested. They must be torqued prior to
running them into wells.
Upon reaching proper setting depth, initiate the
setting by picking up at least 15" at the tool. Rotate
tubing enough to ensure 1/4 round of right-hand
rotation reaches the tool and set down at the same
time. Application of set-down weight at the tool
closes and seals the bypass seal, sets the slips,
and packs off the packing elements (refer to chart
for minimum values; maximum set-down values
can be found in the appropriate rating envelope).

Pick up on the tubing string to neutral at the
tool. Work the tubing left and right with a pipe
wrench, observing tubing rotation and feel of
torque. Ensure that all initial right-hand rotation
originally put in is removed. Slack off tubing weight
to at least 2,000 lb of applied weight at the tool.
With a pipe wrench, apply and hold left-hand
torque, then begin pulling tubing string into ten-
sion. Continue the upstrain with tension over the
string weight according to the chart below. Repeat
a push and pull sequence at least once with no
torque applied, applying whatever loads are satis-
factory to accept anticipated conditions within the
rated limits. Land the tubing as specified for the ap-
plication.
NOTE: If running the HORNET with the L-10 on/off tool,
ensure the on/off tool is pinned in the shear up position.
The same setting procedure will apply.

Releasing Procedures
6,000 Set down a minimum of 500 lb then rotate 1/4
turn to the right and pick up at the same time. This
will disengage lower J and release the packer. The
bonded seal will unload and equalize the upper
and lower annulus. Then the upper slips will re-
trieve using between 15,000-25,000 lb of tension.
Packing element will be stretched out and the low-
er cone will disengage the lower slips. Tool can be
reset or retrieved at this point.
