CALCULATION FOR THE ADEQUACY OF BUSBARS
Bus bar Rating : 4000 A (Force Cooling)
Bus bar Size : 2 Parallel - Dia.100mm X 12mm (thick)-Open D Shape
Material : Copper
Ambient : 50 Deg. C
Document No. :

Cross section Area : 1962 Sq. mm.

Weight per Meter : 17.44 kg

Area of cross Section of single bus bar. = 1962 sq. mm

For 2 Nos = 1962 x 2 = 3924 sq. mm

For calculation split into two parts

1) A single Copper tube of diameter: 100mm & 12mm thickness

2) 2//, 50 x 12 sq.mm Copper flat bus bars

Since for Copper Flat Bus bar area of cross section 50 x12 is not available in (I table), hence
for calculation we have consider 50 x 10 = 499 sq. mm (from table 13-4, page 593 of ABB
switchgear manual)

Therefore Copper Flat Bus bar area of cross section 50 X12 will be = 600 x 2= 1200 sq.mm.

Total Area of cross Section of Copper tube Bus bar = 3924 - 1200 = 2724 sq. mm.

1) A single Copper tube of dia. 100mm & 12 mm thickness

1. For calculation purpose curved shape is considered as Copper tube with equivalent cross
section area.
2. Since current carrying capacity for 100 x 12 is not available in (I table), hence for
calculation purpose we have taken 100 x 08 as reference for calculation.)
Current carrying capacity for a single 100 x 08 thick hollow conductor is as follows.

I table = 2780 Amps, Current capacity given in table 13-5, page 594 of ABB
switchgear manual

K1 = Correction factor for load variations relating to conductivity.

= 0.996 for conductivity of 56 m/ (. Sq. mm) for Copper.
(Refer fig. 13.3, page 605, and ABB switchgear manual)

K2 = Correction factor for the deviation in ambient temperature and/or Bus

bar temperature
= 1.48 for ambient temperature= 50C & Bus bar end temperature
115C (Refer fig. 13-4, page 605, and ABB switchgear manual)

K3 = Correction factor for the thermal load variation due to difference in

layout
= 0.8
(Refer Tab. 13-13, page 606, ABB switchgear manual)

K4 = Correction factor for the electrical load variation due to difference in

layout
= 1 (not applicable being branching is there within 2 mtr)
(Refer Tab. 13-14(b), page 606, ABB switchgear manual)

K5 = Correction factor for altitude

= 1.0 (Refer Tab. 13-14(b), page 607, ABB switchgear manual)

I table = 2780 Amp

Therefore
I continues for hollow tube = 2780 x 0.996 x 1.48 x 0.8 x 1 x 1

= 3278A (Corresponding cross section 2310 sq.mm)

Therefore I per Sq. mm = 3278/2310 = 1.42

Now for 2 Nos Copper bus bar: (100 X 12mm) (Corresponding cross section 3315 sq.mm)
Equivalent continuous current carrying capacity for tube section will be = 1.42 x 3315
= 4707 A . (.1)

2) 2//, 50x12 sq.mm Copper flat bus bars

Since current carrying capacity for 50 x 12 is not available in I table, we have taken 50 x 10
as reference for calculation.

I continuous = I table x K1 x K2 x K3 x K4 x K5

Where,
I table = 1510 Amps, Current capacity given in table 13-4, page 593
of ABB switchgear manual (50X10 two parallel considered)
K1 = Correction factor for load variations relating to conductivity
= 0.996 for conductivity of 56 m/ (.mm2) for Copper.
(Refer fig. 13.3, page 605, and ABB switchgear manual)
K2 = Correction factor for the deviation in ambient temperature and/or
bus bar temperature
= 1.48 for ambient temperature=50C& bus bar temperature 115C
(Refer fig. 13-4, page 605, and ABB switchgear manual)
K3 = Correction factor for the thermal load variation (reduction) due to
difference in layout
= 0.8 (Refer Tab. 13-13, page 606, ABB switchgear manual)
K4 = Correction factor for the electrical load variation due to difference in
layout
= 1 (Not applicable being branching is there within 2meter)
(Refer Tab. 13-05(b), page 606, ABB switchgear manual)
K5 = Correction factor for the altitude
= 1 (Not applicable for installation less than 1000m)
(Refer Tab. 13-14, page 607 ABB switchgear manual)

Now for 50X10 Copper bus bar

I continuos = 1510 X 0.996 X 1.48 X 0.8 X 1 X 1

= 1780 Amp. (Corresponding cross section 1000 Sq.mm)

Therefore I per Sq. mm = 1780/1000 = 1.78

Now for 2 Nos Copper bus bar: (50 X 12mm) {Corresponding cross section 1200 sq.mm)
Equivalent continuous current carrying capacity will be = 1.78 X 1200
= 2136 A -- (2)
From 1) and 2) total current carrying capacity for Bus bar will be = 4707 + 2136 = 6843 A (Approx.)

With above calculations, bus bar size is suitable for 4000 Amps rating for given ambient
temperature 50 deg. C.
