Recent School Developments in Near South Side
This is an exciting time in the Near South Side area as the community grows
Many new families and businesses are moving into the area

To address some of this growth, CPS is building a new South Loop Elementary School
facility
South Loop currently at 113% utilization1
New facility expected to open in the second semester of the 2018-19 school year
Location: 1601 S. Dearborn Street
Parents lobbying for access to new school

New school will add ~1200 elementary school seats to the South Loop area
Combined with current facilities (South Loop Elementary School and South Loop Early
Childhood Center), South Loop will have capacity for ~1800 elementary school students

1. Utilization = Enrollment / capacity

PRE-DECISIONAL | VERSION 1 (6/6/17)
What We Have Heard from the Community So Far
Stakeholders in the community have expressed desire for a continuum of high quality
school options from PreK-12 grade

Community groups, elected officials from these areas and parents from South Loop,
Bronzeville, Armour Square, Chinatown, and Bridgeport have asked for better quality high
school options nearby
Elected officials from these areas have advocated for a high quality neighborhood high school
for several years
Most recently, the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) asked the
Board of Education for a high quality neighborhood high school option to serve the community

Parents have previously expressed concern over capacity at South Loop Elementary School
New South Loop building addresses this issue

Parents in the community have expressed both concern and support for potentially
expanding South Loop's boundary to 22nd street
Concerned parents do not want to lose NTA as a quality neighborhood elementary school
option, including the Regional Gifted Center
Other parents want access to the new high school facility and therefore have advocated in
favor of the potential boundary expansion

Key Needs for Education in the Near South Side Area

1 Ensure high quality, neighborhood school

options for all PreK-12 students in the Near
South Side area

2 Provide sufficient capacity of high quality seats

for the growing student population

3 Integrate diverse school communities into a

set of high quality PreK-12 schools

12
PRE-DECISIONAL | VERSION 1 (6/6/17)
Preliminary Framework:
Convert NTA to a High School
South Loop adds new facility with ~1200 seats and extends current
boundary to 22nd street
Ensures a diverse group of neighborhood children can attend South Loop

NTA converts from an Elementary School (PreK-8) to a High School (9-12)

Preliminary Estimated high school capacity = ~1,000 students1
Framework
Regional Gifted Center re-locates back to South Loop

South Loop Elementary School adds new facility, maintains existing

facilities to serve student population
Total capacity = ~1,800

Provides high quality, aligned PreK-12 school options in the community

Capacity at quality neighborhood elementary schools nearby
Rationale
Demand for high quality neighborhood high schools in the area
Converts an excellent facility in a great location to meet changing needs

Seeking community feedback on preliminary framework

.

1. Initial analysis of converting NTA to a high school estimates capacity for ~1000 HS students
13
PRE-DECISIONAL | VERSION 1 (6/6/17)
Impact of Preliminary Framework
Currently, there are 1530 ES seats and no HS seats at NTA and South Loop
The preliminary framework would add a total of ~1300 new seats across both schools,
enabling a total of ~2800 seats (~1800 elementary school seats, ~1000 high school seats)
