2 Data Usage
TABLE 2: Data usage comparison
Notes:
1. Audio and media message data usages depend on the size of
them.
2. In low data usage mode, data usage could be lower than in
normal mode but the performance of the application may
decrease also in some functions.
3. All the data above are average amount.
Based on Table 2 above, WhatsApp uses average 5.2 MB per minutes and FB
messenger only uses average 4.4 MB per minutes for the video call data usage.
Besides, in the voice call data usage, WhatsApp uses average 740.6 KB per
minutes while FB Messenger only uses average 333.3 KB per minute. Hence, in
the video and voice call functions, FB messenger is consuming lesser data
compared to WhatsApp. In addition, the data used to receive and send text
message for the WhatsApp are average 0.9 KB and 5.0 KB per message based
on 100 text message received and 300 text message sent. On the other hand,
FB messenger consumed slightly higher data for receiving and sending text
message. FB messenger needs around 4.0 KB to receive a text message and
13.0 KB to send a text message based on 100 text message received and 300
text message sent. Obviously, WhatsApp needs lesser data to receive and send
a text message compared to FB messenger. Also, WhatsApp consumes much
lesser background data than FB messenger in order to provide better
application performance to users as WhatsApp only consumes 50% of total
data usage but FB messenger consumes 73 % of total data usage for the
background. Moreover, WhatsApp implemented the Low data usage mode
option for its users while FB messenger has no this option for its users.
Therefore, based on the comparison above, WhatsApp rates higher in the data
usage because it meets four out of six criteria.
