Power Supply and Voltage

Regulation Page | 1

[1] Introduction

This laboratory exercise aims to demonstrate the use of diodes in

power supply and voltage regulation, demonstrate PCB computer
aided design and proper soldering.

[2] General Instruction

On the following page, different activities will be presented, starting

with the schematic design in CAD software to PCB design and lastly
soldering.

A freeware limited to non-commercial use called TARGET 3001! V18

will be used to layout the schematic and PCB designs.

Before starting the activity, listen to the instructions given by your

instructor. Remember that you are not allowed to start before you
are told so.

Your instructor will guide you throughout the process, do not get
ahead of the instructor to avoid any mistakes and any possible
injuries.

Lastly, follow the laboratory rules.

Safety first!

[3] Materials and Equipments

For the following exercises we would need:

General Purpose Soldering Iron Page | 2
Diodes Mini Drill
Resistors PCB Cutter
Multimeter Pliers and Wire Cutters
Oscilloscope Transformer
Capacitors Ferric Chloride (Etching
LEDs Solution)
Voltage Regulators Iron (Flat Iron)
Computer w/ Installed Photo paper
PCB Layout Software Laser Printer
PCBs Wet Sponge

NOTE: For component values , part numbers and count, please refer to the
network diagrams to follow on the next pages.

[4] Circuit Diagrams and CAD

The following are the circuit diagrams to be used for the power
supply.

Place/encode the components on the PCB layouting software,

consider checking the PCB packages of each component when choosing the
components to ensure that the actual components fit in the PCB layout.

After successfully encoding the schematic into the software, please

wait for further instructions before proceeding to the PCB layout.
You will be guided throughout the process of PCB layouting using Page | 4
the TARGET software.
Save your work and email it to rjing1993@gmail.com.

[5] PCB Printing, Etching and Hole Drilling

After you have successfully laid-out your design on the software, it is

now time to transfer the design into the actual PCB.

Here are STEPS:

1. Print out your design (removing unnecessary layers) into a photo
paper using a laser printer.
2. Cut your PCB into the desired size.
3. Clean your PCB using a fine sand paper and follow-up with
acetone or similar cleaning liquids. Dry up the PCB.
4. Cover your PCB with the photopaper with the print facing the
copper side.
5. Heat up the blank side of the photopaper pressing the iron
hardly against the photopaper covering the PCB, this will transfer
the ink (toner) from the photopaper to the PCB (copper side).
6. After completely transferring the ink to the copper, submerge
your PCB on a ferric chloride solution (use latex gloves to protect
yoyr hands). Lightly shake the liquid to speed up the process.
This will remove the copper not covered with the ink, leaving the
designed tracks on the board.
7. Clear the PCB from any dust and liquid, to protect your PCB, you
may apply a generous amount of plastic varnish to the copper
side. This will prevent the copper from rusting. Dry it up.
8. Wear your safety goggles and proceed to 8.
9. Drill the holes where your components will be inserted.

You are now ready to solder your components!

Before proceeding to this step, it is important to take note of the

following things:
Page | 5
1. Make sure you have ample safety equipment. The recommend
equipment are as follows:
a. Safety goggles
b. Face Mask
2. Make sure the area you are working on has good ventilation, you
should avoid inhalation of the solder fumes. You may use small fans
to direct the fumes away from you.
3. Make sure you have good lighting in your workspace.
4. While working, keep your things organized to avoid injuries.
5. Check your soldering iron for any damages that might be dangerous
(e.g. cuts in the wire).
6. Always exercise caution while working with hot equipment.
7. Wash your hands properly after working, lead is poisonous when
swallowed.
8. Do not EAT while working!

Your instructor will demonstrate the proper techniques in soldering, do

not start until you are instructed to do so.
