Background
Companieswithinthejetengineareaarecontinuouslytryingtomaketheirproductdevelopment
activitiesmoreeffective.Inearlyproductdevelopment,i.e.conceptualdesign,productmodelsare
usedtopredictconceptbehavior,e.g.performanceandweightmodels.Thesemodelsareseldom
integratedfullywithCADisoftwarewhyswiftevaluationinCAEiiismissed.Onewaytointegrateis
bygivingconceptualmodelinputtoanautomaticgeometrygeneratorinaCADsoftware.This
enablesmoreconceptualdesignstobeevaluated.

Automaticgeometrygenerationcanbedoneusingknowledgebasedengineering(KBE)whichisa
waytoenableamoreradicaltopologyvariationthanparametricCADwhysameKBEmodelcanbe
usedtogeneratemanydifferentconcepts.Thisisneededinconceptualdesignofjetenginestotryout
manyscenarios,optimizethedesignandthereforegainacompetitiveadvantage.

VolvoAeroisasubsidiaryofABVolvothatdevelopsandmanufacturescomponentsforaircraft,
rocketandgasturbineengines,aswellasofferingaviationservices,overhaulandrepair.Main
customersareRollsRoyce,PrattandWithneyandGeneralElectric.HeadquartersareinTrollhttan,
SwedenwithoperationsinNorwayandtheUSA.Employeesnumberaround3,500.VolvoAeros
componentsarepartofover80%ofaircraftenginesonlargeraircrafts.Thismasterthesisprojectwill
beincollaborationwithVolvoAerothrougharesearchprojectentitledMETOPIAwhichisconducted
atLTU.

Overallgoalandspecificgoal
Theoverallgoalistointegrateaconceptualdesignmodelforweightandgeometryparameter
calculationwithaCAD/CAEsoftwareNX7fromSiemensPLMsoftwareiii.Thespecificgoalisto

Bystudyingtherecommendedliteratureanintroductiontotheareaofknowledgebasedengineering,
wholeenginemodelsandjetenginedesignisgiven.Thentheoutputfromtheconceptmodelshould
beanalysedandbasedontheoutputCADgeometrycanbemanuallygenerated.Learningthe
capabilitiesoftheKBEmoduleinNXisanextstep.Severaldifferentjetengineconceptsshouldbe

understandingoftheaimintheresearchprojectMETOPIAtomaximizethecontributionofthemaster
thesisprojectforexamplewillthegeneratedgeometrybeusedfordifferentanalysis,e.g.
rotordynamics,stress,andthereforeneedtobeconfiguredinawaythatsimplifiesthepreprocessing
doneinNXAdvancedSimulation.ThemasterthesisstudentwillbesituatedatLuleUniversityof
Technology.

Athesiswillbewrittencontinuouslywiththeprojectworktoensurethateverythingisdocumented
