SOIL & WASTE

Hepworth Building Products is a major division of Hepworth PLC, manufacturing vitrified clay and plastic drainage systems
for use in buildings, civil engineering and agriculture, together with bricks, cable ducting, rainwater systems, plastic plumbing
systems (for both hot and cold water services and central heating) and terracotta building materials.

The division has production units in the UK and Continental Europe.

Due to formation of European Union the British Standards Institute (BSI) and their European equivalent formed an internation-
ally accredited committee to oversee the development of a library of Standards which combined the British Standards and the
European Standards.

This is progressively being achieved and as it happens the new standards are being released for use and the old standards are
then withdrawn and are no longer recognized.

The standard for the Hepworth P.M.E. uPVC Piping Systems for non pressure above ground soil and vent systems has now
been changed from:

It has push-fit socket outlet for use with SP06PE/W (Plain
ended pipe) or direct connection to soil or drain pipes.

Can also be used as a turned trap connector for a close-
coupled WC suite. When requied with extended Tail the
S140 is used in conjuction with S121.

S130 WC Connector 2 1/2 o Bend Spigot Tail can be used

where stack is behind WC either in a duct or externally fixed.
When required with extended tail the S130 is used in
conjunction with S121.
S134 Made in white polypropylene, it is a useful alternative to
the S130 where greater flexibility is required.
S150 WC Connector 90o Swept Turned trap with ring seal
socket outlet. Ideal where the stack is to the left or right of
the WC and when fixing new pans to existing soil systems.
Can also be used in concealed fix situations.
Designed to take the pipework back along the wall at
correct bracket distance.

 THE HEPWORTH SOIL MANIFOLD
Plumbing in a complete bathroom can now be much
quicker, with the Soil Manifold, and idea so simple, yet
so obviously useful. A fitting that allows the connection
of all soil and waste pipes above floor level.
FIXING INSTRUCTIONS
The soil manifold is designed to fit neatly into the corner
of a room shown in the schematic layouts (figs .2 and 3).
Dimension X represents the standard clipping distance
from the walls, which for 110 mm pipe is 92 mm.
Alternatively the Manifold readily adopts to ground floor
assemblies as shown in fig. 4.
The tricorn shape allows final adjustment within the right
angle depending on the direction of the connecting
waste pipes. Waste connectors into the Manifold can be
horizontal using swivel elbows or vertical as required.
The Manifold allows sufficient space to connect beneath
the connecting branch as shown in Pic. 1.
Use the template provided with each fitting to mark out
the required position of the Manifold on the floor, then
cut out the shape using a padsaw. Where the floor is not

provided using stretchers.
Connection to the 110 mm inlet can be made in the
normal way by push-fitting pipe or fitting spigot into the
seal. Lubricate the seal prior to assembly.
Connection to the waste inlets is made by removing the
plug from the inlet port required and simply push fitting
the waste pipe or fitting into the Manifold until the stop is
reached. Plugs should not be removed from unused
ports.
This process is further simplified by the unique Universal
Seal which will accept a range of waste pipes in 32 mm
(1 ¼”) and 40 mm (1 ½”) sizes to both BS5254 and
BS5255 sizes. 50 mm inlets are provided as standard
and any combination of inlets is possible giving
complete flexibility and freedom to the installer.
It is also possible to raise or lower the Manifold in
relation to the floor level if required by suitable packing
beneath the locating ledge.
Soil Manifolds can be fitted neatly side by side where
central ducts are used, whilst maintaining direct access
to all inlets and utilizing the minimum of space. Correct
use of the Soil Manifold can eliminate the need for
unsightly runs of waste pipe on external walls (fig. 5)
allowing internal waste connections even on external
stacks. The Manifold can also be fitted at the foot of an
external stack for use as an alternative to a gully.

In fact, that’s just what the Soil Manifold offers. It slots

into the stack at floor level and allows the push-fit
connection of soil pipe or WC branch.
The waste pipework from the bathroom appliances then
push-fits neatly into place in any of the three special
Manifold inlets provided. So that once the Soil Manifold
is ready to be installed it’s only a matter of minutes
before all associated pipework can be connected. Any
space inlets can be used at a later date without
disturbing the stack pipework or utilized for access if
required.
No extra boss adapters to buy. No need for solvent
cement jointing. No mess. And the Manifold itself is
compact and unobtrusive.
The Universal Seal is another unique feature of the
Manifold design. The single seal accepts both 32mm
(1 ¼”) and 40mm (1 ½”) waste pipes to BS5254, BS5255
and Imperial and metric copper sizes. 50mm (2”) inlets
are also supplied and any combination of these inlet
sizes are available.
In use, the Manifold is self-cleansing – and offers
complete protection from induced siphonage in connect-
ing runs. It comes complete with blanking plugs, integral
pipe-stops, and Universal Seals, and also complies with
current Codes of Practice.
So whatever the size of the problem, the Soil Manifold
offers a practical solution.

 THE HEPWORTH DEEP SEAL FLOORING GULLY
Fixing Instructions
The gully should be installed on a firm base and located
relative to the floor finish. The method of fixing will be
dependent on the type of floor finish.
Depth of installation other than that accommodated by the
standard gully can be obtained by using the extension
socket (S417), and an off-cut of 110mm diameter pipe of
appropriate length. In this way any depth required can be
achieved.
The depth of seal is maintained by either extending the
funnel piece with 40mm ABS waste pipe to BS5255, or, by
solvent cementing a trap bowl (S415) to the funnel piece
(S418). The depth can be reduced by cutting the collar down
to the nearest groove and trimming. The overall depth can be
reduced to 125mm in this way.
The tile and grid is fixed in position by either the overlap of the
tile grouting or the surrounding floor finish. The lid can be
removed by pushing down on one edge, and the perforated
grid removed by levering off with a screwdriver or coin. The
grid is fixed by pushing firmly into position. The protective
plastic film should be left in position until completion of the
final floor finish to avoid damage.
Inlets should be drilled using a 60mm (23/8”) hole saw. The
funnel piece (S418) should be removed from the fitting before
drilling. Care should be taken to avoid damage to the boss
shoulders.
Waste pipe connections to the boss shoulders can be
effected in two ways:
1) By using solvent boss adaptors (S101. S102. S103 etc)
and solvent cementing into position in the usual way. The
boss adaptors are pitched at 2 ½o and should be fixed
with the top uppermost as indicated by the arrows.
The joint should be left for at least 10 minutes, and allowed
24 hours for the joint to attain maximum strength.
2) By using the new rubber inserts S420, S421, S422, S423
and simply inserting dry into the boss shoulder. All
standard sizes of plastics and copper waste pipes can be
accommodated in this way.
The standard seal depth (50mm) of the gully can be
increased by the removal of the base with a saw, leaving
sufficient spigot to solvent cement a trap extension b o w l
(S416) into position. The funnel piece (S418) can then be
extended with 40mm ABS waste pipe to BS5255 to give a
nominal 80mm seal depth. The seal depth can be further
increased by the addition of a piece of 8 2 m m s o i l p i p e
between the base and the bowl and extending the funnel
piece with 40mm ABS waste pipe to BS5255 to achieve
any seal depth required.
The funnel piece (S418) and trap bowl (S415) can be used
together with many standard 110mm fittings to provide a
trap arrangement; (see back cover). F o r e x a m p l e , i n
o
conjunction with a 92 ½ bend S12 of a single socket S2,
to give a trapped balcony/roof outlet. See back cover. The
floor gully can be extended using standard 110mm boss
pipe fittings to provide extra boss inlets. Care should be
taken in all combinations to press the funnel (S418) fully
home to give required depth of seal.
Metric conversion rings are available f o r a l l b o s s
connections allowing inlet connection of 30mm, 40mm
and 50mm waste pipes. The 82mm outlet can be sleeved
with 82mm s o i l p i p e t o g i v e a 7 5 m m s o c k e t t o
accommodate 75mm diameter outlet pipes.

for some typical arrangements.
Note: The S414 is not suitable for sheet vinyl floors.

JOINTING
Push-fit Systems
Ensure pipe is cut square and chamfered
prior to assembly with fittings.
Lubricate pipe and fitting with SILICONE
Lubricant S254 and push-fit to full socket
depth. Withdraw pipe 5mm on waste
system and 10mm on soil system to
allow for expansion. Soil fittings with
spigot ends should be inserted into
sockets to depth marks engraved on
spigot. This procedure automatically
allows for expansion.
Anchor fittings with a socket bracket to
maintain expansion allowance. No
expansion need be allowed on push-fit
overflow system.
Solvent Weld Systems
Ensure pipe is cut square before assem-
bly with fittings.
Use H.B.P. Cleaning Fluid on BOTH
surfaces to be joined. This removes all
dirt and machine release agents and
softens the surface ready for the chemi-
cal solvent weld. Failure to do this can
result in joint failure.
Apply solvent cement evenly over mating
surfaces of both pipe and socket. Insert
pipe into socket with slight twisting action
to full socket depth.
Surplus cement should be removed with
a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to
handle in 5 minutes. Please observe the
safety precautions detailed on each can.
NOTE: There is a small gap between the
O.D. of the pipe and the I.D. of the fitting.
This is to allow sufficient solvent cement
into the joint to make a good weld.
Expansion of pipework should be
allowed for by incorporating expansion
couplings at predetermined lengths in
long pipe runs.
The pipe run should be clipped adjacent
to the expansion couplings. No expan-
sion need be allowed on the solvent-
weld overflow system.
Traps
Jointing of traps to waste outlets. Use
washer supplied do not over tighten the
nut (hand tight plus 1/8 turn). No other
jointing compound or materials should
be used.
‘P’ traps can be converted to ‘S’ pattern
by means of BW50/W and CW50/W
conversion bends. Traps are available
with either push-fit or compression
outlets as previously described. All traps
are provided with a means of access
where required.

FIXING INSTRUCTIONS
SOIL SYSTEM INSTALLATION
Mark the position of brackets, drill and
screw fix prior to erecting the stack. Start
from the base of the stack and work up.
Use S5 or S7 pipe brackets in conjunc-
tion with S6 socket brackets. On
multi-storey installations, use S8
galvanised metal brackets on both pipe
and sockets.
Drain Connection
1. HEPWORTHS Plastic and Clay
Underground drainage systems,
Plastidrain, Supersleve, Hepsleve,
Hepseal are supplied with connectors
to the soil and waste system.
2.The S4 is used to connect to old clay
U.G.D. Systems. Using a sand and
cement compound, cement S4 into
the clay collar ensuring that the top of
the connector is above floor level to
allow expansion of the pipework.
3. CAST IRON: The S4A is designed to
connect to cast iron U.G.D. Systems.
Use gaskin in bottom third of cast iron
socket and make joint using cold
caulking compound such as PC4.
Waste Pipe Connection
A range of solvent-on bosses with
push-fit joints allow connections of the
waste pipe systems to the stack.

Metric W.C. Connection
A range of horizontal outlet pan connec-
tors is available for fixing to metric pans
as specified in BS5503. These are
supplied with an integral sealing
diaphragm which allows for up to 5

Imperial W.C. Connection
A range of pan connectors is available to
meet the varying pan spigot outside
diameters. These are push-fit connec-
tors, allowing easy removal in the event
of the W.C. pan becoming defective at a
later date. The polyflex pan connector is
particularly adaptable because it allows

for up to 5 misalignment in any direction.
Shrink-on Connection
Fit a replacement soil ring (S360/3 or
S360) in a reverted manner onto the cast
iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards
pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-
on connector over the seal and apply
gentle heat until the socket reverts and
shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will
compress the ring and form a watertight
seal. The cast iron spigot should have a
relatively smooth surface before making
the joint

 TRAPS AND FITTINGS
Description
Hepworth traps are injection moulded in specially formulated, high temperature polypropylene, to give a smooth bore, and
accurate wall thickness. The compact outlets are designed to give maximum versatility and flexibility, to ease installation in
confined spaces. Traps are manufactured in white polypropylene in 32mm (1 ¼ ”) and 40mm (1 ½ ”) nominal sizes, for
connection to 1 ¼’’ and 1 ½’’ BSP standard waste outlets. The range includes tubular bottle, swivel neck, and anti syphon
types. Traps are supplied with washers to BS 2494.
Trap Outlets
A choice of either Push-fit Varifix outlet or universal compression outlets is
available.
Both will accept Push-fit or solvent, plastics pipe work to BS5254 or BS5255 and
imperial or British “metric” copper.
Varifix traps can be supplied with outlets for connection 40mm I.S.O. metric
pipe.

BARVAC TRAP
Anti -syphon Trap for automatic
protection from syphonage
problems associated with waste
discharge systems. The Trap is self-
cleaning, has no moving parts and
has a flow rate in excess of that
required by BS3943.
