'Video installation is a contemporary art form that combines video

technology with installation art, making use of all aspects of the

surrounding environment to affect the audience'

Psycho is a psychologic thriller by Alfred Hitchcock, with a running time of

109 minutes. In 1993, the video installation 24 hour psycho was created
by Douglas Gordon. Gordon said that I wanted to maintain the authorship
of Hitchcock so that when an audience would see my 24 Hour Psycho they
would think much more about Hitchcock and much less, or not at all,
about me.... The work consisted of taking the already made movie
Psycho and slowing it down to approximately 24 hours. This work had a
significant impact on Gordons early career. The images attached clearly
show the layout of the exhibition, and how there has been a use of
multiple screens. The artist has used technology in order to install
Hitchcocks work, by projecting the video onto multiple screens around
room. I think this works well as the video has been slowed down so much
it may become boring after a while, but having multiple screens around
the room makes the instalment more engaging. The videos are shown in
narrative order. I think that the exhibition has worked well as the screens
are spaced out and they are in a white room, not to distract the viewer
from the instalment. The target audience for the movie Psycho was
aimed at 17-26 year olds as this age group was attracted by the nature of
the video, therefore this is reflected through the instalment through its
minimal layout with mood lighting. This also opens up the instalments
target audience because of its minimal nature. This installation has
inspired my own exhibition; I would like to use multiple screens around the
room showing different scenes of my production. The images attached
clearly show the layout of the exhibition, and how there has been a use of
multiple screens. In comparison to other exhibitions, it is quite different to
Mullicans and Violas, due to the large mass of the set up. Although he
has used multiple screens like the other artists, they are projections which
are showing something slowed down significantly, with no audio. A
reviewer of the installation stated "He went on to imagine that this
someone might suddenly remember what they had seen earlier that
day, later that night; perhaps at around 10 o'clock, ordering drinks in a
crowded bar with friends, or somewhere else in the city, perhaps very late
at night, just as the 'someone' is undressing to go to bed, they may turn
their head to the pillow and start to think about what they had seen that
day."

Matt Mullican is an American

artist, he works with the
relationship between perception
and reality. His work has been
exhibited nationally as well as
internationally. Mullican has
used television screens and
headphones which I think works
well as I think that the use of
headphones focuses the viewers attentention onto the screen. The
screens shoed the viewer a film of the artist hypnotised, moving around
his studio. Shot are from his POV, which makes the viewer feel more
engaged when viewing the instalment. This instalment follows a non-
narrative form as the videos arent in one clear order. The set up consists
of a television on a table with headphones, the viewer can sit at the table
which draws their focus to the screen. The target audience for this video
installation is 28-45 year olds, we can tell because the set up consists of
headphones and a television screen. This layout means that the viewer
wont get distracted around the room and I believe this age range would
react better to a video installation set up like this one. This set up has
inspired my own video installation set up as I would like to use
headphones. This work is similar to Douglas Gordans work due to the use
of multiple screens. Although Gordans work is a much bigger set up. Its
not the world that you see, its the world that I see representing the world
that you see. Matt Mullican
Bill Viola is a contemporary video artist whose artistic expression is
demonstrated through electronics, sound and image technology. His work
is concentrated on experiences such as birth, death and aspects of
consciousness. The artist uses split screen editing to demonstrate three
states, birth, a dream state and a person dying. The set up consists of a
projector and a screen. I think this works well as all of the images are on
one screen, rather than several around the room. The exhibition is a
narrative set up as the images are in a clear order. The target audience is
14+ I have given it such as wide range of ages because I believe that it
can relate to all ages as everyone goes through these stages in life. This
video installation has inspired my own by the use of three separate
images on the same screen, which is something I would like to include.
When comparing this installations to others, it is similar to Mullicans set
up, as he has multiple screens, giving the viewer more than one thing to
look at. We have to reclaim time itself wrenching it from the time is
money maximum efficiency and make room for it to flow the other way-
towards us. We must take time back in to ourselves to let our
consciousness breath and our cluttered minds be still and silent. This is
what art can do and what museums can be in todays world. Bill Viola
